Today I decided it was time I explored some of the city on foot. So I headed out from my hostel and walked down Long Street, one of the main strips in Cape Town where there’s lots of restaurants, cafes and shops.

I spent quite some time in Greenmarket Square, an open area lined with stalls selling crafts and curios. I ended up doing all of my gift shopping, buying more than I’d intended to purchase. I have very little Christmas shopping to do! Now I just need to decide if I’m going to carry it all around or try to send it home . . .

Back on Long Street, I stopped at the PAN Africa Market, a 3-storey building that said had shops. It turned out to be this massive old house where very room (and all along every hallway) were vendors selling more crafts and curios. I felt rather overwhelmed there were so many things everywhere!

Completely worn out of shopping, I took a brief walk through an area called Bo-Kaap, an Islamic neighbourhood. The neighbourhood is built on the hill leading up towards Signal Hill, so the streets are sloped. Many of the houses are painted bright colours. Neat to walk around and look at.

I headed back to the hostel for lunch and internet time. And now I am waiting for Jackie - another South African reunion! I know Jackie from my first ship contract, on the Carnival Legend. I’ll be spending the next few days with her. Exciting things ahead!

I LOVE markets and colourful buildings. I've seen lots of both in my travels so far as well. Perhaps we need more of both in Canada as well.
