Hi everyone,

After digesting all the food we ate over Christmas, we decided to drive up to see Edinburgh which is only a 4 hour drive from Knutsford (...if you don't stop....). We made several detours on the way and came across some heavy snow, especially when we went through the North Pennines (small mountains and forest), so it was a slower trip than hoped. Especially when we hit roads that had not been gritted or salted….Wes’ great shortcut!!! The reason for the detour was to stop at Housestead’s Roman Fort, the most preserved Roman Fort along Hadrian’s Wall which the Romans built during their occupation of England. It snowed like crazy and we walked around in -2 degrees.

Next stop was the England/Scotland border and Jedburgh Abbey in Scotland. We finally reached Edinburgh and booked into our Hotel and went out to a Scottish pub for dinner (we didn’t try the Haggis - although Wes was almost tempted). Edinburgh is a beautiful city with excellent architecture. The castle, which can be seen from everywhere, was built high above the city. The castle has amazing views of Edinburgh, historic museums and the Scottish Crown jewels are on display. Edinburgh is broken up into the old town and new town and we obviously spent most of our time exploring the old town, especially the “Royal Mile” which runs from the castle to Holyroodhouse which is the official Scottish residence of the British Royal family.

We definitely recommend Edinburgh as a city to visit!!

We thought Housesteads was terrific - and got buzzed by a low-flying RAF jet at extremely close range while we were there - everyone on site hit the deck, it was so low! Have fun - love from danbee xx
