Ao Nang beach
30 minutes outside Krabi After Megan left we headed to Krabi on the west coast of Thailand. We had only intended to stay maybe one or two nights, but we found a cheap place for under 100B/each ($3) and decided to stay around. The town of Krabi itself does not offer much, it's pretty quite and most things are closed by 10pm, but it does have amazing day trips.
Ao Nang beach is the local beach of Krabi and only 1/2 hr outside of town. We decided to head there for our first day of fun in the sun. The beach was pretty nice and the water was a bright shade of turquoise. Not to mention... there were monkeys on the beach. Yes- a ton of crazy monkeys all around the beach that would attack people for a banana or a pineapple. Jeff loved this and we spent quite a long time staring at the crazy monkeys. Other than that it we just spent the day relaxing on the beach and yes... I got another massage. At $5 for an hour- I decided I better take advantage of this more often.
We had contemplated leaving Krabi to stay at Railay Beach, supposedly one
of the prettiest beaches in Thailand, but due to cost, we decided to stay in Krabi and just take a longtail boat to Railay for the day. It's a 45 minute boat ride, not bad; except they try to fill a boat before they leave so we spent a while waiting till a few more people came so we could leave.
The landscape at Railay is unreal. Huge green junglely cliffs that come out of the ocean. The green mixed with the blues of the ocean was amazing. You just couldn't help but sit on the beach and stare at the gorgeous beach. After the morning on one of Railay's beaches, we headed up the coast a bit to another one of Railay's beaches. This beach was also amazing, with huge caves that you walked through to get to the beach and huge caves that actually came out from the beach. There were these rock formations that overhung the beach and once again, we couldn't believe where we were.
The next day, was not a fun one! They give you a 30 day visa on arrival to Thailand and we are about to expire in four days and
therefore we had to make a visa run. Now, you'd think the Thai government would make it easier to get a visa extension, but they don't so we had to spend the entire day taking a mini bus to the Malaysia to literally get stamped out of Thailand, stamped into Malaysia, walk around to the other side, get stamped out of Malaysia and stamped back into Thailand. Now... we have another 30 days. Literally 12 hours of driving for a 15 minute process at the border. NOT FUN AT ALL!
Other than that, we just spent a few days sleeping in and recouping from our crazy times with Megan. After Krabi we will head to the Phi Phi islands to chill out even more. These blogs are not too exciting for the fact that we are just beach bumming. Apparently, all of you are noticing my lack of detail in my blog so here are some Thai details:
Currency: Baht about 30B to $1
There are over 7,000 7-11's in Thailand
If you see a hot girl, it's probably just a lady boy (pretty boys are encouraged to be lady boys when they are young by their parents
so they can make money for the family)
Island hopping is expensive in Thailand
We are currently on the west coast- the side that was devastating and still recovering from the Dec 2004 Tsunami
Krabi is world famous for its rock climbing
If you watch the movie "The Beach" it was actually filmed on Phi Phi islands on the west coast, but the dialogue suggests they are on the east coast (near Ko Samui/Ko Phan Nang- where we just were)
It hurts to shave your face with cold water (according to the boys)
It hurts to shave your legs and armpits with cold water (according to me)
Bangkok is not child friendly (there are lots of dirty things going on there that are hard to ignore)
Burma (Myanmar) actually heads down almost the entire east coast of Thailand (I didn't even know where Burma was before I got here)
Ok- is that enough education for you people?! I'm trying to do more details, but there's not much to say- beaches and islands are pretty.
