Cruise Day 11- Dubrovnik, Croatia

(Sue) Captains log stardate ..... sorry I thought I was in outer space. Talk about being long way from home! The pattern of our lives on board this ship has fallen into an odd routine. We get up, go touring through another city for 4 hours, come back exhausted, eat, drink and sleep. Occaisonally we catch up with fellow cruisers to share common experiences. Our standards are starting to slip as we haven't been to the restaurant for dinner in a couple of nights. We discovered the casual dining restaurant that does brekkie and lunch also does a mean dinner without the waiters and fuss. Being a true blue Aussie this suits us. We will have to relent tonight as it is another formal night and our 2nd last on the boat so its suits and jewellry again.

We haven't taken part in many of the shows or extra curriculur activity as we ususally eat after 8 and are ready for the sack at 10pm. We did manage to see a couple of singers so we don't feel too bad.

Anyway on to today in Dubrovnik- It started out bleak, rainy and cloudy but gradually after a really heavy downpour later in the day, it cleared. The ship docked in a spectacular setting with the old town, a river and mountains behind, right next to us. We love waking up to new scenery every day and the anticipation of a different culture and story of the city/ country etc. Not having any knowledge of Dubrovnik we eagerly listened as our guide explained the amazing history of this city. The city currently has around 45,000 people, but has a huge reputation spanning many centuries as a vibrant cultural centre due to its position between the east and west of Europe. The old walled city has stunning architecture that reflects the additions by different peoples over time, but remains harmonious with the environment it is set in. As you look down on Dubrovnik the orange tiled roofs are a common feature. Our guide explained that most of the these have been replaced since 1991 due to the bombing during the war that broke up Yugoslavia. As he said why would anyone want to bomb Dubrovnik as it has nothing of importance here except tourism.

After our guided tour we spent a few extra hours tasting the local food and shopping. Walking the cobbled streets, marvelling at the wonderful buildings is a pleasure we will remember for a long time.
