Jellyfish on a Stick
I couldn't help but laugh here, as Cole and I exchanged looks yet act very excited about trying this new food. Hi Everyone!
I’m wrapping up my last day at work and thought I’d post one final blog, mostly with pictures. The week has been pretty uneventful (or perhaps I’ve settled into more of a routine here!) The founder of our org was out of the country for a while, and just returned to work Monday so I’ve spent a lot of time with her walking through the project I’ve been working on which has been an interesting and very frustrating task, as she is not used to thinking in the business mindset. I question if the recommendations cole and I are giving will be implemented or used. Partially they are a bit radical and she’s gotten a lot of bad advice in the future. It’s hard to argue with the logic/rationale that we have for our recs, yet at the same time it’s a good lesson for us on how to effectively influence outcomes w/o being (ineffectively) blunt and when you don’t have the authoritative power to do so.
Other than that, the week was filled with hanging out with people, saying goodbyes, etc. Monday night our founder brought cole, her daughter, and I out to dinner which was
Possibly the Weirdest Food Ever
Ice shavings covered with seaweed jelly, Corn, beans, syrup, whatever else you can identify in the picture. delicious. on Tuesday night I put together an alumni/current student dinner which was a great time, though Cole and I got there much earlier than everyone else and had some delicious cocktails before everyone else arrived! ;-) Oh, we also got to see our malaysian classmate, Siao Fan, for the first time! She lives outside in the city, in the direction that Cole and I live as well. It was good to see Gab and Feng one last time, and when we got back Cole and I stayed up till 4am sitting on our balcony, chatting - I’m going to miss seeing him so much! We’ve been together 24/7 for a month…turns out you get to know someone quite well ;-)
Wednesday we had somem shopping to do for gifts to leave with Z’s kids; so we spent a while picking those out then went to a 9pm batman movie. (It was Wednesday so the ticket prices are literally less than $2…I love it!) It was very long and gave me NIGHTMARES!
Thursday night, my last night! We spent with z’s family - really wanted to see them again before we left! They suggested different options, and, well
to get to the point, we ended up bowling again! Embarrassingly enough, I seem to have this penchant for the right hand gutter….when we showed up Z said he was going to leave the right hand bumper up for me….I laughed, but found out 5 minutes later he was NOT KIDDING! So, I broke 100 on a half gutter : -) We were limited in our bowling time, as we met at 6:00pm and fast breaks around 7:20pm…so we all went back to Z’s house to break the fast, and eat dinner. I ate so much food it’s not even funny. I LOVE the malay food! Last time we were there we had this delicious spicy pineapple dish, and we got served it again! ;-) best meals we've had here....very gfew homecooked : - ) For dessert we had a REALLY interesting thing - steamed tofu, but they pour just a tiny bit of brown sugar syrup over it - it’s DELICIOUS and I’m definitely going to make it at home. It’s definitely up there in a list of tasty but healthy desserts - right with Pink Berry and Red Mango, which I’ve been craving since I left NYC.
Oh and I almost forgot they have this fruit that is typical around asia called Durian which people either “love or hate” (so when I say it’s nasty it’s not a cultural taste thing!) It smells putrid. No kidding. It’s banned on public transport in Singapore and if you want to bring it in to fancy hotels you must pay for 3 extra nights, cause that is how long it takes to get rid of the smell once you leave. There are some pictures on here with my reaction to eating it. So we had a great time chatting, hanging out, eating! Z recommended a book he said I had to read that he is sending home with me…
Louise, the woman who works in my office for the other company, also came and brought her ADORABLE 6 year old daughter! After dinner she drove us to one of the hot spots to go out in KL called Bangsar. I could have also gone to bed, but our Malaysian classmate really wanted to show us around KL more, so we met up with her and got to chat and have a drink. She’s a great girl and is in
Cole on the Bus Adventure
I one day randomly hoped on a bus instead of waiting for a cab, and cole jumped on after me. we rode for like 30 minutes, and then realized it was going the wrong direction. Oops! BOTH my seminar classes next week, so I will be seeing a lot of her! It’s amazing how much better you feel like you can know and get along with someone when you know something about their background/country/where they come from! The ever-friendly Malaysian hospitatily, Siao Fan and her brother dropped us off at the condo - so sweet!
Meanwhile, work has plugged along during the day, and I’m really going to miss Poo Lai and Rachel! They’ve been so great to us….we joke around all day, and EVERY day they bring something for us to try (as in food). Normally it’s great, and Rachel’s mother has been in town so we’ve been lucky with some delicious red bean cakes, carrot cake, etc. etc. Oh, and it’s also currently the Chinese MoonCake festival, so we’ve tried a lot of those. We’ve decided they have gotten more aggressive when they brought in these NASTY chewy, “satayed” jellyfish on a stick. Gross. Luckily that was followed by an Egg Tart - which was delicious. Cole and I also brought them out to a thai restaurant for our penultimate lunch which was fun. On my last day (today!) the founder brought us
out for lunch again… Chinese style :- ) Now, time is about up! Can’t believe I’m leaving tonight!
After work I’ll just pack up and clean the condo, then I’m off to the airport! Sadly I have 2 back-to-back red eyes which isn’t the most fun travel times, but I’m VERY excited to spend the day with my host family in Tokyo, eat MORE yummy asian food - Japanese!! - and being able to stop there might actually make the trip seem shorter since it’s broke up a bit? We’ll see. Then, my parents will be at the San Fran airport to pick me up! SO great! They are leaving Seattle for the trip down (drive) right when I leave KL…! So I will get to spend a day or so with them. Monday, back to school : - )
Alright, off to compile my documents in a reasonable order to leave here…. : - )
I guess this is it from me, talk to you all back in the US!
