Well here I am..... Bangkok!!!
Feeling confident after Phuket I opted for another mini adventure to my hostel and got the bus! I think I said before that my luck might be changing and it is! - the bus not only takes me to the area I'm staying but also drops me off right outside the door!! According to the website the hostel is located in a central area of bangkok - it's a flippin lie!! I'm in some small suberb that is a millon miles away from the centre, however, I don't mind the hostel is a lot like the one in Singapore and has a good bar area to meet other people.
After soughting my gear out I head back into the bar area, the place is pretty deserted apart from a group of a 5 or 6 people talking. so in true bob tradition I buy a pint a sit down in the middle of the group and then ask if anybody minds if i join them! They seem a good bunch of people but as the night draws on one by one they get up and leave. I think it might be my BO but the english girl I'm left with assures me I'm ok!
The English girl I've been talking too tells me shes out with some friends tomorrow so I invite myself along. As the night goes on new people arrive and as they do I find myself holding court and inviting the rest of bangkok to join us tomorrow. By the end of the evening I've got 12 people on what i've now called Bangkok Virigin Tours. I sometimes think that I'm in the wrong job. maybe i should have been a tour guide!
The next day myself and my tour party get the sky train to the river, this in itself is a big task It's like going out with the lads from home - no one can make a choice what they want to do! At the river we seem to spend a life time deceiding what to do. get the standard boat or hire a long boat. Because the of the mix of the grup we get the normal boat as it's only 11 baht. The long boat is 180baht each (2.5 sterling - sorry no pound signs in computer) What I've noticed about myself and other travellers is that my budget is about 10 times more than them. Apparentaly when you have been travelling a while every penny counts!
After the boat issue we all deceide that we will go to the Royal Palace. When I get there I'm not alowed in as my 3/4 pants aren't the right style - that and they show my legs which is disrespectful to Buddha. It's not a problem as you can borrow pants, these things are cool and wouldn't go out of place in a 70's disco. We hire a guide (which a gain is a mammoth task) who I can only describe as a female charlie chaplin! I can't tell, you anything about the palace apart from it very sexy!
As where touring around the conversations turns into what we do at night and one of the girls asks if we can go to the red light district, for the first time all day everyone is in agreement - yes!
We're going to go and see the world famous Ping-Pong show (sorry Mum!)
It's a bit of a let down and not what we expected. We end up in a nightclub with a band, their really good so I let my hair down and party on! Then my bad luck comes back to haunt me I've lost the group and have to make my own way back to the hostel! I opt for a 3 wheel tut tut car these things are crazy but then I'm drunk so I don't care :-)
The next day I wake up and I'm ok my years of training in the tavern and sportsman's has paid off! I meet a couple of new people over breakfeast (3.00pm) and we decide to head out to see the sights. We get completley loss but none of us seem to care and take it in our stride. We stumble on a market which ignites the senses this place sells everything from remote controls to the kitichen sink and it's all locals. We play spot the white person as there is no one about. It's weird, Bangkok is a city of 8 millon people and they all seem to be at this market.
After the market we find ourselves in China town which is another cool place, our lost tour is turning into a peach! A local shows us the chinese buddha who stands and nots sits - it's all sureal and so cool! We grab a beer in a local bar (i.e. on the street) Half the price - bargain! After that we somehow manage to find the sky train back home - tonight might be my lucky night and it is! When we get back to the hostel bolton are on TV and we win 4-0 against the run of play. This is truly a good day!
Just for the record it has been bought to my attention that my spelling is pants!!! Well tough!!! I'm sorry I should have paid more attention at school but I didn't so you'll have to put up with it as I twrite these things at some dodgy hour and this thing doestn't come with spell check!!!
