Paraty - a very wet rum festival; a very sunny sailing adventure

Having left Ilha Grande on a very very wet boat, we braved our first locals bus and sped towards the pretty colonial town of Paraty. A 5 hour journey later, we arrived to.....rain, rain and more rain. A soggy day and a half later, our spirits weren´t dampened! we persevered through a weird, muddy pinga rum festival (a hillbilly brazilian festival complete with eerie paper mache inbred figures depicting farmers - the water somewhat deformed their features making it all the more freaky) and then to our delight, the sun came out and the town came to life.• City highlights: the weird pinga rum festival - watching the locals play the biggest bingo game we´ve ever seen and trying to avoid massive puddles whilst navigating our way through the cobblestone streets; an incredible robinson cruisoe style sailing adventure - there were as many staff as guests on the boat (one of the perks of travelling during the off season), sailing to private beaches, swimming in crystal clear blue waters and listening to a rotund, jack johnson style performer sing samba/brazilian folk tunes.• Accomodation: 4.5/5 - a gorgeous pousada run by an all organic vegan californian expat and his brazilian artist wife; delicious breakfasts and beautiful furnishings obviously.• Food: oooohhhhh we´re divided with this one. food on the cruise, our breakfasts and the gelato have been delicious. all else isn´t worth a mention.• Misc: Random iranian tourists who insisted on filming us play racquet ball for our technique so that they could show their family back home (whilst our skills are gradually improving, we pity those who have to sit through this footage!); sailing past the LG island complete with helipad, restaurant and 5 star lodgings for the local execs - it pays to be korean in paraty (although jean´s lineage did little to warrant an invite).
