Living it up in Fiji...ish

Well we've been here for over a week now and we are now finally relaxed. What have we been up to?

Jack and Mark have both had ear infections (Mark's started in San Diego) but luckily we learnt from our last two holidays and got both of them prescription ear drops before we left home, Mark's is mended and Jack's is on its way to being fixed.

Whilst we are on the medical notes for the trip we must mention Mark's broken toe! He fell off a sunbed! He took a chunk of flesh off the tip of the toe and had some fantastic bruising (Annabel is convinced it was broken, Mark not so).

So in between varying ailments what else have we done?

More crab hunting by us all and in the process we stumbled across a sea snake in a rock pool, which we carefully avoided. This was a good move as it later transpired to be extremely dangerous once provoked (apparently it takes a fair bit of provoking but no doubt the kids could have managed it!). Other wildlife has mainly been found in our room - we regularly get little bottom presents from a mouse and we've actually seen the mouse running around the room too. We've also had the delight of the geckos chasing crickets (the crickets were removed before we had to endure the lizards getting to crunch them whilst we are trying to sleep). We also had the pleasure of the biggest spider all of us had ever seen out of captivity, it is now just another statistic. Annabel didn't scream, more speechless, and it made a big mess on the floor when Mark knocked it off the ceiling and captured it under an upturned bucket.

We are sleeping quite well helped by the protection of our mosquito nets and also despite the noise from the sea which is sometimes so loud that it feels like it is rushing right up to our front door not actually 20 metres away.

Mark has been on four dives so far, seen turtles, white-tipped reef shark, spiny lobster, parrot fish and varying other fish. He has also been snorkelling on the house reef with Ellie which is apparently excellent.

On Thursday night we went on a night time line fishing trip. It took a while for the fish to bite but Annabel and Ellie were both successful bagging a red snapper each. Ellie's was the biggest of all the fish caught on the whole trip. Unfortunately we were unable to eat Ellie's fish the next day for lunch as apparently when they grow past a certain size they become poisonous. So instead we ate Annabel's and a barracuda caught by the crew - yummy!

We've been entertained by the local church choir who are apparently fiji competition winners! We've also been entertained by the staff who performed a traditional meke (dancing and singing) and then we ate a traditional fijian buffet called a Lova which is food that has been cooked underground.

The kids have spent their days swimming, swimming and more swimming and also making friends with the other kids in the resort and playing volleyball with them, and chasing them and hunting crabs etc etc. Mark and Annabel meanwhile have read, and read and read and not a lot else. We've participated in the odd crab hunt and done the odd bit of swimming but not alot else.

jealous :)
well it all sounds just wonderful, lazying on a gorgeous beach, reading and watching the kids have fun swimming. Helen and I are certainly jealous, still sunny here during the days...but the frosts are starting so only a few weeks before we see the first snows on the peaks....summer goes too fast here!!! Looking forward to reading more about your adventures soon.
