Wedding

It has been a short night. When we arrived in Lampang I was given a sheet and asked to spread it on the wooden floor of the house and sleep. Lying there I tried to remember when I had last slept on the floor and I had come to the conclusion that this is most likely a first.

It took me ages to fall asleep. Not because of the lack of comfort I'm used to but because of K and his friends laughing outside and all the impressions I've gained since travelling seemed to occupy my mind endlessly. Furthermore it was really hot and all the mosquitoes in town seemed to have spread the news of the arrival of a foreigner. I was bitten again and again and I had no means to defend myself. At some point my watch said that it was 3.30 in the morning. I did fall asleep eventually and woke up again at seven, hearing through the open window that some of the guests had already arrived and there were many things going on outside. I noticed that K was sleeping next to me. He must have come in sometime during the night. Surprisingly I felt just fine. During the night I had been worried that I'd be really stiff in the morning from sleeping on the floor.

Though we were in a different part of the country with different traditions the events of the wedding seemed much the same as last time. However, I liked this wedding better. I was dressed in nothing special and wore no make up. I still looked different from everyone else but this time I didn't feel like people were just secretly staring at me but actually approached me, tried to make conversation and asked me to be photographed with them. I didn't feel like they were looking up to me too shy to say a word but rather wanted me to be part of the festivities. K also seemed to be more relaxed with the situation and let me walk around alone rather than following me step by step.

After the ceremony we sat down at the tables where we were served a lot of food. Unfortunately it was way too hot to eat and I didn't touch much of the food. The guys seemed to really like something that looked strange to me.

Chicken feet to the left and delicious looking, black cloured one-thousand-year-eggs. Must try!!!
It was kind of transparent and wobbly. They asked me to try and I was about to but then decided to first ask what it is. They said they're chicken feet and have an excellent taste. Maybe I shouldn't have asked but after I know what they were I couldn't bring myself to try them anymore. K tried to talk me into eating one-thousand-year-eggs. He already offered them to me at the first wedding and I refused to eat them. Looking at those black eggs really didn't make me feel like eating one especially because he couldn't really explain to me how they were treated and why they turned black. I gave in eventually and tried and... well, I have to admit they're quite good and I even had a second one.

Then it was time for entertainment. Thais are crazy about karaoke. Last time K didn't want to sing but this time he got on stage did a great show. He's a born entertainer and everybody loved him. An elder lady walked to the edge of the stage and gave him a flower. A young girl followed. Later on K bitched at me because I only took a photo of the elder woman and not the young, attractive girl 😉

After the amateur singing three professional singers arrived and rocked the show. The guys were overjoyed by the sight of the girls standing on stage half naked. I only looked at K for a second and he turned blazing red.

As the girls took a break K went back on stage and his show was great again. The girls noticed and came back on stage to dance along to his singing. He was really proud.

At some point K's friend Boy asked me to dance and I decided to give it a try. It was good fun and later on he told K that he would never have thought that I'd follow his invitation and that I did well considering that I know no Thai dance. We had a good time.

Around one in the afternoon the wedding was over and we wanted to go back to Chiang Mai. But the guy who was to give us a lift wanted to stay until the evening. Therefore we sat the whole afternoon in the shade tired, bored and hot, hot, hot. The guys started drinking

one glass of Whisky after the other and somehow we got during the day. Finally in the car most of them fell asleep at once while I noticed that the luxury cool breeze of the air conditioner brought life back to me.

Back in Chiang Mai K wanted to go for a last drink with his friends before they'd board the plane to fly back to Bangkok. I noticed that he didn't really want me to come and I didn't mind because I can't understand them anyway and therefore told him I'd wait at the home stay.

When K got back around 10 p.m., I wasn't in a good mood. It was so hot that I thought I can't take the heat anymore and I was attacked by mosquitoes again.

He suggested we go to the Internet cafe. What a great idea. They had air conditioner there and for the first time since my departure I called my parents. It was good to hear their voices.

After the Internet cafe K took me to the famous Chiang Mai Sunday market. It was a nice market and I enjoyed the atmosphere. It was a nice way to end this very long and extremely hot day.
