Hi there from beautiful Sicily, land of sunshine, music, great food, Greek ruins, volcanoes, mud pools, endless olive trees, and enternal heat.....the last being the death of me.....an exageration but I have to say the heat is never ending. Day and night it seems like the temps are in the 40s. Since the last blog I sailed from Malta where I stayed with Maria and Karl for 10 days and had a wonderful stay, I arrived in the south of Sicily and after a week of camping and cycling around the sites, I then headed north via the cape to visit Syracuse and further north to Taormina, pearched overlooking the ocean and with Mt Etna blowing her stack in the near distance. Catania a few miles south was the next rest stop where I did a night tour up to the lava flows of Etna and wandered the ancient streets of Catania. I then detoured into the hills to Enna where I visited with a local friend Josie and her husband from Morocco and Mostaffa and I celebrated our shared birthday on the 15th July. After 10 days in this region I then cycled down to the north coast and cycled 200kms along the turquoise coast. As the name implies, the water was this colour and crystal clear, perfect for snorkling. Lots more Greek sites of ruins to visit, I then trained back the same way in 2 hours what took 3 long days on the bike. Palermo at first sight was a dingey hot city but after 5 days here of exploring I must say its got under my skin. Beautiful harbour and coast and lots of churches and sites to see.

Sicily has to be a must on anyones tour of Europe. After 6 or 7 trips around Italy Im glad I have finally made it this far south. The local people are very friendly and helpful. The icecream is to die for and the beachs other than packed with Italains on holiday, are clean and clear for swimming. Im leaving here tommorrow for the final 200km bike ride around the West coast and sail to Sardinia next Sat. The cycling has been easier than I expected, Ive managed to avoid the mountains and other than the heat it has been a great trip so far. Im not sure about Sardinia as Im told its hillyer so Ill have to wait as see. So until I make it there, lots of love from Kiwi Kay xxxx
