Today is the King's Birthday, a major holiday here in Thailand. Interesting to see a country love and celebrate it's leader. I mean, can you imagine celebrating Bush's birthday? Then again, can you imagine celebrating our president even if we DID like him? We just go for our generic 'Presidents' Day' and nobody spends the day thinking about or celebrating in any way the presidents, we tend to think of it more as '3 day weekend!? I can sleep in on Monday!?'

Last night we had dinner with Dew, a friend of my lovely aunt Joyce. Joyce hosted Dew's sister when she studied abroad in CA several years ago. They have kept in touch over the years. We met Dew near the Si Lom station at a Starbucks. We went to the counter to buy a bottle of water and the man said 'I recommend the Crem Brulee Frappacino.' I was speechless. Dew told us that Starbucks is such a treat here, a big deal for the people because they charge the same prices they do in the US, so a frappucino is approx 200 Baht at Starbucks where a coffee is more like 100B anywhere else.

She told us that fast food is all the rage with the kids. They love to hang out at Subway or McDonalds. It's what the cool kids do. It reminded me of when I was a little kid and I wanted a happy meal so bad (mainly because i wanted the stupid little toy that came with it...it seemed like such a good deal). Dew said she saw SuperSize Me. I was impressed. She said there is a film festival here. One of her friends is big into independent films, so she goes sometimes with him to see films. Dew was a lot of fun, spoke English very well and brought us to a DELICIOUS dinner at Anna's Cafe then drove us around for a bit of a driving tour. We shared a chocolate cake dessert that was amazing and at the end we insisted that she have the last bite and she told us that it is believed that if you have the last bite then you're husband will be very handsome. That sounds simple enough to me. I like that.

On the driving tour We passed a strip of bars, one was called I LOVE HIP

HOP (witha heart instead of the word); on one side of the bldg it said west and on the other it said east and it had big baller white couches all over the outdoor area, it looked so swank. i want to go see it again and maybe take a peeeecture.

I have not been taking very many photos so far. I am much more timid this time around, maybe because we are in a big city rather than smaller villages. Plus I have a travel buddy this time and am more distracted. I think I'll probalby take more when we leave this big city, but here are a few that I like from the last few days.

Mailbox Tag
I guess our culture and spirit of wanting to express ourselves in graffiti has spilled over as well. Have you had the chance to have someone intrepret the tag?
