So I left Calgary and gave Tom a break for two days while I went to Edmonton. The bus ride took about 4 hours, and I’m pretty sure I slept through most of it. I did manage to get a few photos along the way, but everything was so flat, not a mountain in sight after we got out of Calgary! Still pretty in it’s own way though.
Once I got to Edmonton I got on another bus to my hostel, only to find that it was in the middle of nowhere.. There were houses all around it! Odd. Dropped my bags off and got yet another bus to the West Edmonton Mall. I’m told it was once the World’s Largest Mall, before an Asian country took that title. It was then deemed to be North America’s Largest Mall, before the Mall of America was bigger. Now it’s just Canada’s Largest Mall.. But it’s still pretty impressive!
On top of however many hundreds of retail stores, there are movie theatres, a water park, ice skating rink, a theme park, glow in the dark mini golf and a seal show, all inside the mall! Kinda crazy. I didn’t end up
doing any of the extra stuff, just shopped for the two days. I was at the mall alone, so it wouldn’t have been as much fun to do those things by myself. I did go and see a movie by myself though, for only the second time in my life. I saw Baby Mama, Tina Fey’s new movie, and it was pretty good, but not as funny as I had wanted it to be.
The bunk at the hostel was the smallest thing I’ve ever been in, headroom wise. I got a bottom bunk, and had to huddle down if I wanted to avoid hitting my head. I was so scared I’d wake up in a fright in the middle of the night and knock myself out. It was only one night I guess. I was hoping to meet someone cool to go to the mall with the next day, but my room was full of old ladies and Asians who didn’t speak much Engrish. Le Sigh. All good, gotta get used to being by myself again I suppose!
I headed back to Calgary on the 6pm bus. At the Greyhound station I saw Boobs McGee, a girl
Brass man
I had lunch with this man, he didn't have much to say though that Vanessa, Erin & I had seen at Calgary the morning before. She was dressed as sluttishly (woo I made a word!) as they come. Keeping in mind that it was 8am, she had the shortest of short black dresses on, showing cleavage that was so out there it’s indescribable. She also had long blonde totally obvious hair extensions. Her real hair was short and oily on the top of it. She was just a class act. Honestly. Gross. Anyway I saw her in Edmonton and thought I might have the opportunity to ride on the bus with her again. Goodie. She instead was there with her native boyfriend begging for money. She just gets better, really she does.
I was supposed to arrive back in Calgary at 10:10, but there were all kinds of delays. They had overbooked the bus, so offered us the chance to give up our seat, get on the next bus to Calgary, and they would refund our ticket price. I would have done it, but because I have a pass and didn’t actually pay for the journey, I thought they’d pull a shifty and not give me any money for waiting around. I
did give up my seat so that a mother and her baby could sit together though.
Tom wasn’t sure if he could pick me up from the station, cos he had to drive his friend home. He said to call him when I got there and he’d see where he was. My phone had started dying the night before, and stupid me hadn’t packed my charger. I had been keeping it off and turning it back on every now and then to check messages, but by the time I reached Calgary my phone had completely died. Eff!
I decided I’d try and catch a bus home. It seemed like every bus number except the one that I needed went past at least twice. I waited for an hour, but after that I felt like crying whenever a bus came past that wasn’t mine. I gave up and caught a taxi home. When I got there Tom and his housemate Gui had been worried about where I was, Tom had even been up to the Greyhound to try and find me. Worst timing for my phone to die! So sorry!
The next morning I slept in then packed all
my stuff. Tom and Gui were nice enough to let me keep some stuff there til I come back in November. As ruthless as I thought I was being when I was packing, I brought so much stuff with me that I really don’t need to cart around the country. I managed to get a full backpack of stuff out, and have taken the backpack with me to use if and when I buy more stuff.
So yeah, I’ll be moving to Calgary for my next destination to work. Wages are so much better than Vancouver, and rent seems to be about the same, so it should be a lot easier to save! At this stage that will be November.. I think it should be snowing by then.. How excitement!
So my bus to Montreal was at 12:15pm that night. Tom drove me again and we met Vanessa there. Our trip is 2 days 9 hours, but we keep getting delayed. God I hope we don’t miss our connections! It’s now 4pm ish Sunday afternoon, so we’re getting there. Not sure I could do this trip again though, it’s a little painful. Saves so much money though.
Will update again when we’re in MONTREAL!!
xx
