We took the train last night from Bangkok and arrived early this morning in Chiang Mai. This time we were able to get a hold of tickets in the sleeper car - much, much more comfortable than the last train ride.
So far I love Chiang Mai (which is in the northern most part of the country). Our travel book describes it as such, "the climate is forgiving, bookshops outmuscle synthetic shopping centres, and the region's unique cultural heritage is worn as proudly as its vibrant hand-woven textiles." In my opinion, it's a great mix of traditional Thai culture and modern conveniences (there is even a three storey Starbucks). The city is very into holistic practices, so there are many vegetarian restaurants, yoga studios, bookstores and the like. We ate at a fantastic vegetarian restaurant for a lunch - a mushroom and tofu burger and a tofu and green bean curry over brown rice. It was so good! We spent the rest of the afternoon visiting Buddhist temples (I've heard it said that one gets sick of cathedrals when visiting Europe because there are so many. We're starting to feel the same way about temples. There's a reason why they
call Thailand "the land of a million buddhas."). When then headed over to the night bazaar, which is full of imitation designer purses, clothes, sunglasses, etc. I have yet to purchase any souvenirs...
Our hostel is great as well. The room is spacious and clean, and (drum roll please) we have hot water! I am completely used to bathing in cold water now, but the hot shower this morning felt fantastic.
