I don’t know what to say about the past 3 days except BEACH!!!!
We’ve finally arrived to the completely relaxing part of our trip. Day 9 started with a 11am pick up from our hotel in Chiang Mai. We woke up pretty early because we had to meet with our tailor, Nick, one last time to get Jeff’s last few shirts and to give him our address so he could send my dresses. We enjoyed our included breakfast and amazing fried rice one last time, and sat down and actually watched a few minutes of CNN! The most exciting news of the day was the new tribe that was discovered in South America. Amazing..,,Wow!
Jeff and I discussed Thailand and how incredible it is on our way to the airport. We are really in love with this culture and how different it is from what we’ve always known. We talked about how by the time 3 weeks arrives, we’ll be sad to leave, but ready to get back to what we know too. This is the longest trip Jeff has ever taken away from his horn since he was a child. He’s doing very well!!!!!
So, on our
fight to Phucket were the 4 Irish from our trek. It was great to see them one last time. They had just booked their flight literally the night before! Jeff and I loved seeing the special place in the airport set aside for the monks. It had special couches and chairs and plants and tables. It was pretty cool.
Our flight was 2 hours long and we got a MEAL! Can you believe it? It was the first thing they did. Thai Air has been great. Jeff said that the time from the gate to take off was faster than he has experienced in years. We enjoyed our flight by watching an episode of Dexter (one of the many DVD’s Jeff has bought here). It’s a pretty good show, if you haven’t seen it. Kinda creepy…but so far we’re enjoying it.
We arrived in Phucket at 3pm to see our name on a sign from our driver waiting for us. He informed us it would be a 40 minute trip to our hotel in Karon Beach. We were staying at the Karon Princess Hotel. I enjoyed watching the scenery, and noticing that most of the cars on the
island are new. I’m wondering if it’s because of the Tsunami, or if there is just more money in Phucket than anywhere else we’ve been so far? Maybe both.
We arrived at our beachfront hotel around 4 pm and had a quick check-in. Jeff was feeling pretty tired, as our first 8 days in Thailand have been packed full, and he was working so hard straight up to leaving. I told him to take a nap and rest. I ventured out to see what was going on. I found a sandwich shop where I ordered a pretty bad sandwich. I guess it’s best to stick to Thai food in Thailand! I then headed down to the beach where I took a walk and dipped my feet in the water. I walked the length of the beach and stopped at a quicky mart to pick up a snack and some beer. I went back to our hotel and enjoyed my beer on the balcony with the ocean view. It was incredible!
Jeff slept till about 8:30pm…he obviously needed the sleep! We headed to the hotel restaurant for a quick bite. I got a ham and cheese sandwich and Jeff
ordered Hawaiian Pizza! Both were very good, but very different from what it would have tasted like in North America! We decided to head to a Thai massage house where we both got incredible massages and then headed to bed!
Day 10 we had a noon check out. We woke up around 9am and headed down to our included breakfast and ate outside looking at the beautiful ocean. We then changed to our suits and headed to the beach. We played in the waves and laid in the sun for a bit before heading back to the hotel to check out and get ready for our 12:15 pick up.
We were picked up by a very full van which took us to the port for us to sail to Koh Phi Phi (pronounced PP!!!!!) We got a great seat on the boat outside in the sun between 2 guys from Denmark and 3 guys from England. We started the 2 hour trip correctly by sharing a Singha Beer….well…one led to 4….and the boat ride in the sun was quite fun!
Upon arrival at Phi Phi, we were met by a man from our hotel who had a
cart waiting for us and our luggage. There are no cars that we’ve seen yet on Phi Phi. This island is where the movie “The Beach” was filmed. It’s absolutely gorgeous! We walked about 5 minutes to our hotel, and said our goodbyes to the guys from the boat. We all planned on meeting at “Hippie Bar” at 6pm.
Jeff and I took a quick nap, and lotioned our bodies after getting more sun than we’ve seen in years. We’re not so burned, just a bit crispy! We actually used sunscreen, but it didn’t help much!
Jeff headed to “Hippie Bar” before me, because I needed a bit longer to wake up and get ready. I had earlier bought a cute sundress for about $8 and put it on for our night out. I met Jeff at the bar, where he had ordered Lobster, Tom Ka Gai, Spring Rolls and a beer for us to share. Slowly the rest of our guys arrived, as did 2 Australian girls we had met earlier. We drank (this bar has great “buckets” of alcohol….where they give you a bucket and a bunch of straws), talked, and had a wonderful time at
the beach bar. There was an incredible fire dancing show around 11:30pm right on the beach. Jeff and I stayed a bit to dance with everyone else, and then we took off, stopping at 7-11 on the way home to get a few late night snacks!
So here we are at 11:30 am on day 11. Jeff and I have just woken up, and missed our breakfast. We’ll probably head out to get food in a few and then just enjoy being lazy and seeing the island. We’re meeting up with the guys again tonight at 6pm for another fun night and our pick up tomorrow is 9am! We head to Koh Samui tomorrow for a few days. This island is on the Gulf of Thailand and is supposed to be incredible!
Hope you enjoy our pictures!
Love,
Nina (and Jeff)
