My Side
My side of the room Well now that it's almost the end of the semester, I guess it would be a good time to write about my room...and my very ummm, interesting, roommate. For some reason I just haven't had very good luck with roommates over here. At the beginning of the semester I had to change seminar houses because I didn't like my roommates, and all I wanted was someone normal. Well, I didn't get normal! But the one good thing is that because so many of my friends live in Seminar House 4, I don't have to be in my room all the time! But I will tell you more about my roommate later...gotta save the best for last!
Well my room is a Japanese-style room with tatami mats. There's really not much to the room...just my closet, my futon, my desk, and then there's one table in the middle of the room. I guess you could call it simple. Me and my roommate pretty much just split the room in half. So yes I basically sleep on the floor! But the futons are actually really comfortable. Even though I'm just a few inches from the floor, I find the futon really soft
My Desk
My desk area, complete with Justin Timberlake calender lol. and cozy, and I look forward to going to sleep every night and wrapping myself up in the warm blanket. I'm definitely going to miss my little futon!
But there is one thing that I'm sure I
won't be missing...
As I may have mentioned in an earlier entry, my roommate is really messy! Now she is a pretty nice girl, and we've had a few bonding moments as roommates, but that doesn't change the fact that she is a complete slob. Her half of the room is so gross! You can't even see the floor from her bed to her closet because it's constantly covered in clothes. And her desk is also a disaster...papers everywhere, so much clutter, and about 3 full trash bags just sitting around! And the very worst thing is that she even leaves food out in the room. Since she eats in the room a lot of times, she'll just leave the cartons out, sometimes with food still left in them. I know I'm not the most organized person, and I will admit that back home my room usually looked pretty chaotic, but I have never seen something this bad. By now I
Futon
My comfy futon! have learned to just ignore her whole half of the room. I don't even look at it, so I don't really notice the mess anymore (or at least I try not to!). But now that the semester's almost over, I'm just ready to get away from it!
So yes, my roommate is messy...and as if that wasn't bad enough, she's also kind of strange. And I'm not even trying to be mean! I am always nice to her and a considerate roommate. The first time I realized she was strange was just a few nights after I moved into the room. We were talking and she said something about how she goes out to bars in Osaka on the weekends and usually stays out all night, and how the bar owners always call her to tell what's going on. So I thought that was cool and said she must know a lot of good bars in Osaka. And she said, "Oh well I don't know...the bars I go to are all lesbian bars." I definitely wasn't expecting that response! And I don't know exactly what that means, but I decided it was a good time to end the conversation
Rommate's Side
This is how my roommate's side of the room looks every day. and just went to sleep.
And then another night right after spring break, I was at my computer working on some homework when my roommate said "Hey, look at this!" So I turn around to see her dressed in a
HAMSTER costume...a full body costume with a hood and everything! Not really knowing what to think, I just kind of laughed and said it was neat and turned back around, wondering if I really did just see that. Ever since then, the hamster costume has made many appearances. Sometimes she wears it to sleep, sometimes I'll come home and she'll just be sitting at her desk, either on her computer or doing homework,
in the hamster costume, and she's also worn it down in the lounge. She even told me that she wore it out bowling one night!
And apparently her friend got one too, but hers is a cat, so they've started an animal costume trend among their little group of friends in the seminar house. One night I came back and saw a bunch of people in animal costumes gathering in the lounge. And one day I was walking past the laundry room and saw a
Where's the Floor?
I can't even see the floor underneath all those clothes! tiger taking clothes out of the washer! I had to do a double take on that one...and no I wasn't imagining things, it actually was a tiger! This seminar house is a crazy place...
So that is basically what I've had to live with for the past 4 months...a messy roommate who goes to lesbian bars and wears a hamster costume! Think I'm over-reacting? Well I've never had to live with someone else before, and I'm the kind of person who likes my own personal space, so maybe I'm just not used to it. But I do think that out of all the roommates I could have possible had, mine is the least normal. Oh well, I can't wait to go home in just 2 weeks and have my own room! Although I will greatly miss that futon...
