Port ArthurPort ArthurPort Arthur

The view from the cruise boat.
The Port Arthur Historic Site, a convict settlement circa 1830, is a five minute walk from where we were staying last night, so we walked down early to have a look around before anyone else got there. We had about an hour to look around and then we were taken on a walking tour around part of the site. At 11am, we went on a boat cruise around the site and surrounding islands. After the cruise, we had more time to look around the site and I searched to see whether there were any Firminger's or Cory's at Port Arthur, because many of the convicts were sent from England. There was one Cory, but it didn't say whereabouts he was from! We spent three hours at Port Arthur and still didn't get to see everything, the site is huge.

This afternoon, we went to see Tasmanian Devils. Recently, a contagious cancer has killed off a massive number of Tasmanian Devils in a short space of time and the centre we went to keeps some Devils that haven't been affected and is helping to save them from extinction. We also saw birds, wallabies and we hand-fed kangaroos.

Our tour ended this afternoon but everyone is staying in Hobart until at least tomorrow so most of us went out to an Irish Pub tonight. I've made a lot of friends on the tour.

Tassa Tasmania... Tassa Tasmania... Tassa Tasmania. Tasmanian Devils are little disappointing if you ask me. Glad you enjoyed it instead of slaving away in the fruit fields!
