5th April
We arrived in Rio around midday and just stayed on Copacabana and Ipanema all day watching beach football, volleyball and other local games. Mike then arrives much later than we had expected, but on time at around midnight.

We went to the local derby between Flamengo and Vasco, in the Maracana the 100,000 seater stadium, which finished 2-2. We sat right in the middle of the flamengo fans and the atmosphere was amazing they didnt stop chanting and druming all game!
In the evening we had an all you can eat pizza, on copacabana, but brazilian style where they dont have tomato sauce, and also the dessert was dark chocolate, strawberry and cream, and white chocolate pizza!! which tasted supprisingly good.

We walked around the districts of Lapa and Santa Theresa and saw the world famous ceramic steps and even met and talked to their creator. Also we saw the cathederal which is very similar to the Nikolei Kirche in Berlin. Santa Theresa is a lovely neighbourhood raised up on a mountainside so you get beautiful views all across Rio.

Our last full day in Rio, and the first sunny
Cathedral
Kathedrale one, up to now the weather had been hot but with clouds and rain. We saw the Christ and Sugar Loaf, however were extreemly unlucky. For both of them all the way up you could see the top and im sure there were amazing views however as soon as we hit the top inconvenient clouds decided they wanted to obstruct our views.
We then decided to walk back from the sugar loaf as our hostel wasnt that far, but then suddenly ended up in the outskirts of a favela. The wierd thing in Rio is that wealth and poverty are so intermingled and you can almost instantly without warning find yourself in a dodgey area.
However overall Rio is nowhere near as dangerous as poeple make out. If you are careful with which areas you go to and dont obviously flaunt your wealth its fine. I didnt ever really feel scared by something.
9th April
We got the coach over to Ilha Grande which is the most beautiful Island around halfway between Rio and Sao Paulo on the Costa Verde (Green Coast). There are no cars on the Island and the only way around is by boat or to walk. It takes 2 hours bus, which are all pretty good and probably better than anything ive had in england although the aircon is turned
Lapa Steps
Lapa Stufen on too much and its freezing! and then 1.5 hours on the boat from Rio. However the Brazilian drivers are all crazy and going up mountainous roads you sometimes get nearly thrown out of your seat.
10th
We went to Lopes Mendes round the back of the Island which is either a 3 hour walk or 30 mins boat then 15 mins walk. We took the boat both ways. Lopes Mendes is apperently one of the top 10 beaches in the world and I can see why. The sand feels like snow, the waves
are pretty good and the best thing is that apart from the other poeple there it is completly natural and untouched by humans. We just spent all day swimming, playing beach football and a cool brazilian bat and ball game.
In the evening there was an all you can eat bbq and then we sat and watch a thunderstorm from the hostel which was amazing, and also cleared the air for perfect weather the next day.
