So finally it was the Louvre. THE LOUVRE. I was so excited. My last visit to Paris I did not get to see the Louvre. Well, I do have a picture of me standing outside the Louvre, but I did not get to go inside. (Long story) and I was thrilled to finally be here. The most famous museum in the entire world! I must say, though, we were not there very long at all. We were there maybe a good 4 hours. And prior to my visit people kept telling me that you could look around the Louvre in an entire day and still not see everything. Well, they're right. You could probably be in there three days in a row and still not see everything. But alas, we did not have a whole lot of time .We literally packed in every major monument into one day. So, 4 hours was all we could spare inside the Louvre. And let me tell you, it was nice getting out of the cold.
Well, I hate to say all we saw was the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo, but to be honest, that's
all I really knew. Although I do like to look at art, and I'd like to say I do appreciate it, but I'm no art guru. I did find the Louvre to be quite overwhelming. We had no idea which "wing" to start off in and we found the map itself to be very confusing. It took nearly a half hour just to figure out the dumb map!
So we did what any normal person who is not familiar with art would do....we wondered around. Don't get me wrong, we did not race through the museum looking at whatever, I did take in the sights. We wondered around some pretty sculptures and some Egyptian artifacts and of course, paintings. Oddly enough, they allowed photography. Even at the Mona Lisa. The room she was kept in was busy with school groups and other tourists. When I saw her I thought, "you are a sight for sore eyes." Of course Jay had to ruin the moment by saying, "You'd think it'd be a little more grand, like that over there," and he pointed to a huge colorful fresco on the opposite wall. Ahh, Jay, gotta love him.
Funnily enough, right
outside the area where the Mona Lisa was, we saw a few of our fellow travelers sitting on a bench looking exhausted. We talked to them for a good half hour exchanging stories of Versailles (they went, we did not) and the subway singers, and basically the trip in general. Two of the nice ladies are from Buffalo, another couple we talked to are from CA, so a nice range of places everyone is from.
Afterwards, I just couldn't go on anymore. My feet hurt so bad. I bet we walked several miles today. I imagined that once I returned to the hotel and took my shoes off, the soles of my feet would be bleeding and bruised. They were not, but it sure felt that way. We boarded the subway one last time and this time, nothing out of the ordinary.
Also, I must add, that despite all the weirdness, we did not encounter any rudeness. Jay used his limited French to get us around. I tried to at least say "Bonjour" to a few people but it sounded more like "Bon-jer" and when I tried to say "Merci" it sounded more like "Mercy."
I guess
it would have helped to take a french course before coming on this trip??
