Why I love backpackers

I knew it was a classy joint when I checked in and they gave me a card listing the bar nights. Last night was traffic light night, where you got to wear a coloured wrist band indicating if you were on the pull or already spoken for, and with a quick round of strip musical chairs for the ladies. Tonight, apparently, is a male backpackers' stripping contest.

So I went out for drinks and food with a friend of a friend instead. Phew. Close escape. It would have been, anyway, if one of my roommates hadn't persuaded me to go for a quick drink when I got in. It was an interesting experience. I picked up two German 20-year-olds within about 5 minutes, until I got hold of a red wristband, and I was one of two people over 30 in the whole of the packed bar.

The best bit came hours later, at 3.30am, when I was woken by a screaming Irish girl because the guy in the bunk above her had just pissed himself and it was pouring through the mattress onto her.

Like I said, classy joint.

Moral of the story: always take the top bunk (unless you're likely to piss yourself).

Yuck.....
Hmmm. I had been envying you for your trip but that right there is enough to stop any envy. Of course, given that there is no way that I would want to stop in a hostel anyway, I imagine that it is kind of a moot point. Glad to see that you are surviving. Just to let you know what you are missing here. Snow, protests at the Olympic torch rally, London mayoral campaign, freezing cold temperatures, the slum village at Heathrow T5 - passengers sleeping in cardboard boxes whilst trying to get a flight out of there. It looks awful. Anyway, take care. loads of love El
