I got some decent waves Saturday at Little Avalon. I went out with my friend Jake. We surfed about an hour and then the wind came up and the surf died. Later that day Maya, Conner, Jake, Marti, Jakes girlfriend Lan, and I all went bouldering. It was really hard. I had never been bouldering before. It's kinda like climbing but on a smaller harder scale. You don't use any ropes. You just fall onto a mat. I was so tired at the end and my arms were pretty sore the next day. Sunday I went surfing again with Jake, Conner and Jakes little brother. We went to Long Reef. The surf was really crappy and there was a strong onshore wind. Plus there were bluies in the water. Everyone got stung except for me. I was pretty stoked on that. Sunday evening I went to Tropfest. It's the worlds biggest short film festival. They showed 16 short films. Naomi Watts and Geoffory Rush were both there to judge the films. The film were shown up on a big screen outside on a large field. There were tons of people there. I went with Anna and Elise and we met
up with some of Anna's friends and Rhys. (Rhys is Anna's boyfriend and is a really cool, extremely good surfer.) Well anyways we hung out, ate dinner and watched short films. There were some really funny ones and some really strange ones. My favorite was about these three old people. I don't know quite how to explain it but it had a good twist at the end and was hilarious. The one that won 1st place was decent. It was a sweet film but I didn't think that it was that great. We got home late and then I had to wake up early and go to school. I was so tired.
Monday I went to school and it was ok. School is sorta boring here. Tuesday though we went to Towra Point by Botany Bay for a field trip in geography. It was a full day trip. At Towra Point we looked at the mangroves and how they are influenced by the different ecospheres. It was a fun trip I've never been around mangroves before. At one point we went and looked at the soldier crabs. They're these bright blue crabs about the size of a ping pong
ball without legs. With legs they were about the size of my palm. There were thousands of them though all running around on the sand in groups. It was awesome. When you ran up to one of them it would curl up into a ball and burrow into the sand sticking their legs in the air. Their legs are sand colored so they blend in by hiding their blue bodies in the sand and only show their lower legs. The beach was packed with them. You couldn't run for fear of annihilating their poor little lives. It was pretty sweet. After seeing the soldier crabs we went into the mangroves and looked at some other crabs. It was super muddy and my flip flops sunk in deep. It was an effort to pull my foot up each time. You had to wear flip flops because there were oyster shells all over the ground. The crabs in the mangroves were black and orange, purple, or green. They were smaller than the soldier crabs and would pinch you if you picked them up. The mangroves were really cool. The trees look like they're on stilts and there are tons of pneumataphores. Pneumataphores
are like little snorkels for the mangrove trees. They stick up all over the mud floor at low tide completely covering the ground. After the mangrove we went to the other side of the peninsula and went out into the eelgrass. There we found some more cool little critters. a bright orange mobile sea anenome, a purple pipefish, and a big very dead crab. That was the end of the excursion. We took a van back to the bus stop and I caught the bus home to Avalon. Oh I forgot to say that the Airport is right next to Towra so the whole time there were huge jets flying low right overhead. You couldn't hear anything but the plane when it flew over you. It was crazy, this nature reserve is right next to an airport. I thought it was rather ironic.
Got some super fun, good surf Tuesday. Longboarding mellow waves but so much fun at North Avalon. Richard is back now so he was surfing too. Wednesday I went to Jaime's house and went swimming. Jaime is in year eight. He is Anton's son. We give him a ride to the bus stop every morning and
his mom picks us up in the afternoon. Well anyways we went swimming with Jaime's friends, Holly a year ten, and Cameron a year eight. It was pretty fun. After that we surfing at North Avalon. It was pretty fun, not as good as saturday, but still decent. After a surf we made a rhubarb blackberry pie. It was so good. Today I went to school like usual. After school there was no pie left. Anton, Richard and I checked the surf but it was really crappy so we didnt go out. Now I think I'm gonna go play soccer with Elise. Tomorrow I think Maya and I are gonna play hookie and stay home because it's supposed to be really nice. So we'll probably go to the beach or something. Well I hope everyone is doing great. I'll try and write more often but I've been rather busy.
