Highway 178 from Bakersfield along the Kern River and Greenhorn Mountains was the most beautiful road we've been on this trip. The rocky hillsides and mountains on either side with the Kern River off to the side below was gorgeous. I admit, the road was pretty twisty, but so delightful. There were a lot of pull-offs, which was handy, so cars could pass us and I could take pictures. Lake Isabella was a jewel. Before we went over Walker Pass, it turned back to desert with lots of Joshua Trees and sand.
The drive up Highway 395, with the Sierra Nevada Mountains on one side and the Inyo Mountains and Owens Dry Lake on the other, was beautiful, too. Tomorrow - Death Valley!
