The day started out wet, then things got real hot. Rain, rain, rain, so it was time to move on out of Cairns and off to the center of the continent. We did a quick booking for some R&R on the west coast, then made a dash for the airport. We made it through security and had enough time to find some rice and wait for the call. Something so exciting hearing your name called in an airport. Who really knows you there, and why do they want you??? First thought is always flight cancelled, then other things pop in the head, like problems with luggage. We ended up getting interesting news. Only 3 of us on the flight. Okay, no real problem, will be a cozy flight. Well....they load us up on a golf cart and we expect to be taken to the farthest end of the airport to board some tiny 20 seater....not quite. We go about 100 metres and sitting in front of us is a 100 seat boeing 717 jet. The crew outnumbered us 2 to 1 and we have to admit, it was the best service we have ever had. Captain Brad (we were on a first name basis with everyone) even came out and gave us a talk. We landed in Uluru and as soon as we stepped outside, the heat was the first thing we noticed. Then the flies...oh..the flies. 38 degrees according to Brad, the hottest we have ever felt. No humidity, so it was an interesting heat to feel. We rented our car and found our hotel. The town is actually all resort, interesting concept. Once settled in, we picked up the other passenger from the plane...we had offered him a ride to the rock (and if you haven't made the leap yet, he is the austrian), and to the rock we went. Once at the rock, we got out of the car, and this is where we met the protectors of the site, the flies. Most people were walking around with nets, looked like bee keepers. We were a little too cheap to buy them, so our arms got a work out swatting at them. We decided, so wisely, that since the sunset would be in 3 hours, we should walk the 9km around the rock. Hmmm...there is some wisdom in there, haven't found it yet, but it is there. We used up a couple litres of water, and a couple hours later(2.5 for those keeping exact counts), we were dragging our butts to the car, with crusty, salt arms. What is this white stuff on my arm...why...it is salt!!! It was a great sunset, managed to get a few pics in between swats of flies. Back to the hotel, and we had a swim, which was heaven, and then a small bite to eat and it was bedtime. Why bed at 9pm??? Well, we decided to watch the sunrise tomorrow, and that starts at a little after six, which means getting to the park at 5am...very smart folks!
