Hello all from the tropical Cairns!
Last time around we were waiting for my aunt Ruth Ann & Bill to arrive here in Cairns. Afterwards we had a "busy" schedule to keep up with to see all that was planned to see 😊 The overall plan was to stay in Cairns for 2 days, then go for a 4day divecruise on the Great Barrier Reef, spend 5 days in Port Douglas and then head back to Cairns for 3 more days. Then we'd say goodbyes and Ruth Ann & Bill would continue on to Sydney and leave us scratching our heads here in Cairns 😊 That was in short what happened in the last two weeks. The long version is below.
The first day we just catched up and had a good balinese dinner. We, I and Carolina, rather enjoyed a restful sleep in a room of our own having slept the previous week with 6 other people in the same room. The following day we took a train from Cairns to Kuranda, a small tourist town in the rainforest. On the way the train stopped to let people get off and enjoy a view of the Barron Falls.
At Kuranda we went to a butterfly sanctuary and saw loads of, of course, butterflies. Some of them were HUGE! After touristing the town, we took a skyrail, a kind of a skilift, over the rainforests and back to Cairns. Day's result was views of Barron Falls, Kuranda, lots of butterflies and rainforest and a weird looking dog 😊
The next day we set off to the cruise which turned out to be the trip from hell for Carolina. We set out and enjoyd the scenery of Cairns and headed out to the outer Reef. The Scubagods, as Ruth Ann called them, were not in our favor. The ocean was rough, mildly said, and the swell was big. This lead to the boat rock quite a bit, and this forwarded to people getting sea sick. Thankfully my experiences on the ferries between Turku and Stockholm have not always been the easiest, and so I have the experience of getting my "sea legs" quickly when needed. I had no problem coping with the rocking boat, while on the other hand poor Carolina was stuck in the Cabin from day one. She got into the water once and just aggravated her
knee and got a fever as well. I went into the water nearly every time we stopped, though it wasnt the best weather I saw enough to satisfy my snorkeling needs :D And I got to see the Potato Cod ! Whippedoo! When we finally got to Lizard Island and our feet to solid ground Carolina got much better. She will remember the Great barrier reef too, but for very different reasons than most people do. Ruth Ann & Bill really enjoyd their diving and saw a LOT! Good on them I say. (Later we found out the bad weather was caused by a cyclone Guba about 800kms up north from us...)
Back in Cairns we rented a car for the rest of the time and I was chosen to be the driver for the remaining time. We drove off to Port Douglas, relaxed in our hotel by the beach for the evening and had a barbie.
The first day we went to Mossman Gorge and did a walk in the rainforest. At the end of the walk there was a creek that settled down and was great for swimming. Only thing was it was freezing cold! Nice
though with the heat we were experiencing. It was a lovely spot (and we shared it with dozens of other people)...
The next day we went to the Daintree rainforest area. We took a ferry over the Daintree river and drove up to Cape Tribulation. Now I have to tell you that the weather was still acting up with us because Guba had come even closer. So we had rain fall on us every once in a while. We stopped in a couple of places and had luck. It stopped raining when we were outside of the car and actually saw quite a bit of scenery. Beautiful such and had a blast. On the way back we were going to stop on a lookout to see a long strech of beach, but the entire area was blanketed with fog.... So nothing to see and we kept going back to home. We were accepting the weather purely on the fact, that when you go into tropical rainforests, you have to expect rain. And therefore we didnt and will not complain about the rain. Ha ha 😊
On the third day we explored Port Douglas by foot and went to the Sunday
markets and such and such. We had coffee a couple of times and I rather enjoyd not having to drive for a day 😊
On the fourth day Ruth Ann & Bill went for a river cruise early in the morning and as Carolina stayed home and slept, I was on my own little adventure around Daintree Village. Not much to say about it though.. I had brekky in a lovely little forest resort and read my book. The village was tiny!!! Later that day we drove to Mareeba and went to a gorge and saw loads and loads of Wallabies. Lovely little creatures. Ruth Ann bought some seeds and we fed them and rather enjoyd our time 'till dozens and dozens of Japanese tourists arrived and made their kind of loud noise and picture taking......
The following day we had to check out from Port Douglas and head down to Cairns but with a twist. We dropped Ruth Ann & Bill to a bird lagoon for birdwatching and I & Carolina went to Mareeba and found a minigolf course. Then we picked them up and drove the long way to Cairns and saw a little more rainforests and tablelands
and a couple of lakes and the hugest Fig tree ever!
Back in Cairns we decided to ditch the river rafting trip and have a day off and do whatever we wanted in Cairns and in the evening to go to a aboriginal dinner show Tjapukai. Tjapukai was good food and aboriginal show with a hint of humour in it. We enjoyd the food and the show. Good fun!
The last day we decided to do a waterfalls tour in the tablelands. We drove to four different waterfalls all great in their own way. We swam in two of them and one even had a really cool natural waterslide. Very nice indeed. Yours truly just had to go and slide through it atleast a couple of times 😊 Ill put a video of it in here.
Next day we drove Ruth Ann & Bill to the airport and sent them to their travels. Afterwards we've just been hanging out at the lagoon in Cairns and soaking up the sun. We really dont have any idea what we are going to do from now and where to go. For what will happen, you will be able to read it on here
😊
Oh yeah, Arsenal is on top of the league, alone. Good on us!!!
Love ya!
