Four days from now, I am supposed to be in the skies somewhere between London and Cape Town.

I say "supposed to", because for the last few days I have been suffering from otitis media, more commonly known as "glue ear". This means that, in addition to having gone partially deaf in my right ear, I'm currently unable to equalise - in the aural not the sporting sense. The doctor tells me that, were I to fly at present, there is every chance that my eardrum would burst on take off or landing. Not a risk I'm willing to take, however good the trip that lies ahead.

And it should be fantastic - six southern African countries in eight weeks. Half a dozen days in Cape Town, South Africa; up through the Namib desert and through Namibia; the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park and Makadigkadi Pans in Botswana; Victoria Falls, and a wedding in Zimbabwe; Maputo in Mozambique for Christmas; Swaziland for (hopefully) the "fertility festival" before New Year; then back through the "other side" of South Africa to finish off.

Read about it here. If I ever get to leave, that is. Fingers crossed, and ears open...
