Today was mostly a day of administration. After getting our washing squeaky clean with a packet of Omo washing powder we took a stroll into the nearby town of Karen to catch up on life in the Western world at an internet café (not so much a café but more of a room with a few prehistoric PCs). Next it was time to embark on the Acacia overland truck for our first journey; Nairobi to Arusha in Tanzania. Crossing the Kenya/Tanzania border was a rather interesting affair with hoards of Masai women surrounding the truck trying to sell us their supposedly handmade jewellery. we could see tourists being cheated, thinking they were buying a genuine piece of Masai jewellery when Charmaine used to import identical items from India to resell on ebay! Charmaines Irish passport that she obtained prior to our UK departure served her well at the border. Everyone in the group had to pay a $50US dollar visa fee but ahhh, the luck of the Irish, Charmaine didn’t have to pay a penny. The six hour journey to Arusha was a bumpy one but we finally arrived at our campsite which was inside Meserani Snake Park. It was comforting climbing into our tents that night with the knowledge that many venomous snakes and seven or eight crocodiles were also spending the night, some twenty metres away!
