End of day 1 back at work!
New suit, new job, what can go wrong !?? Hello again to all !
Not sure if I'm braking my own record now, but let's say with a bit of preparation, and a lot of luck, I've managed to get a work contract signed and find a flat (mate) within 2 weeks of touching down in Sydney.... Think almost 7 years ago now I had a job to start on Monday, and 2 weeks later I did move into my own place... close call.
Either way, the (video) link on top of this entry will give you the Google map of where I am now. The flat is actually on the corner corner of Bridge and Princes Street, but that's a detail.
What else, the first 5 days I was in Sydney, catching up most days with people, sorting out my storage (furniture etc), getting the car back on the road (spend a lovely 6 hours in Bankstown...), and drove down to Melbourne on the Wednesday, as I had already lined up an interview for Thursday. I actually had 2 that day, so that worked out nicely. In the end, after a few too many phone calls with "yes, they want you", I finally got a contract
Stoner leading his home race
MotoGP madness at the penguin island (Philip Island) signed on the Tuesday, starting work on Monday the 22nd ! Same as I've done before, so shouldn't be too hard to get back into it.
As they say, it's not what you know, it's WHO you know. In short, a friend of a friend of a friend of a friend hooked me up with Narelle, the new flatmate, as the friend of a friend of a friend was moving out of the unit, so I could jump in..... that same weekend. Luck of the draw I guess, but I had already been looking at 7/8 units (!!?!?) in Port Melbourne, so all very fortunate for me, as most of the inspections had a posse of over 20 people invading the units, so my chances of getting any of these (expensive) units were slightly grim....
As we say in Neerlandia, Narelle is "crazy, in healthy way", so that should work out fine. Well, either way, she was crazy enough to forgive me for flooding the bathroom and part of the carpet when I forgot to put the washing machine's pipe in the sink.... apparently it's all part of my initiation here !
Any other news, have already
been to the MotoGP at Philip Island, where I caught up with Serge (my former manager, who actually still speaks to me!) and his mates, so that's already one tick in the box. Local here and fresh world champ Casey Stoner took the honors in the main category bye the way !
Other news, have bought 2 new suits, for the price of 1.... excitement central down here !
In the mean time, I've also taken the opportunity to try a few new things, such as flying from Avalon with JetStar (to Sydney, which is not new). The bus ride was just under an hour but was hilarious. Sort of a tourist bus to the airport in the countryside. I now not only know the cost of real estate in the Docklands, but also where the new cars arrive from overseas, and that a baby hippopotamus was born in Werribee zoo, one of only 2 ever born in captivity in the world !
The fun weekend was fun for starters, catching up with more friends, with more baby holding involved as well, and also a Buck's/Hen's night for the upcoming wedding of Lisa and John. All great
Narelle, the new flat mate
who was kind & crazy enough to take me in. fun, unfortunately the bathroom floor the morning after turned out to be harder than my tooth.... so unfortunately I'm already back in the dentist's chair after less than a month.... But as they say over here, it's all good, mate !!
The job, well, end of week 2 so far, and very unconvincing. Some people warned me of a culture shock when getting back to work, but I was never really worried about that. The bigger shock really being the change from one company, where everyone worked together and knew what they were doing, to, well, you fill in the blank dots................................, yes, fill them all in................................ Either way, have a 3 month contract, and now that I have a new dentist friend here in Melbourne with 3 staff, I don't have a reason to walk out all too soon....
I've just bought my Melbourne Cup ticket for Tuesday (that'll be horse racing, the "race that stops the nation", and possibly some drinking, women with big hats and little dresses, and potentially a lot of rain), and after finishing this story I'll head of for a Melbourne cup of Latte coffee, possibly with a piece of cake, as
Sharp corner, fast bikes
250 CCs at Philip Island it's Saturday !
Hope you're all well.
Ciao
Rene
