After a very enjoyable few days in Paraty, we were off to Ilha Grande, a beautiful island 100 miles off the coast of Brazil. Blessed with jungly hills, 106 sandy beaches, blue lagoons and bays full of tropical fish, it's the kind of place that you see featured in the travel supplements of the Sunday papers at extornionate prices and can only dream about visiting. Yet there we were for just a few pounds on the ferry and 20 quid a night for our studio apartment.

It was impossible not to become fully fledged beach bums during our 6 days here - the "capital" AbraĆ£o is just a village with a few dirt streets housing pousadas, knick-knack shops, restaurants and a few bars around a main square. There are no roads, so apart from an ambulance and the police's golf buggy and quad bike, there are no vehicles; you get around by boat or bike or on foot. It took just 5 minutes to get from the hammock on our porch to our nearest beach, or to the jetty to catch a boat to one of several idyllic spots, like the completely undeveloped Lopes Mendes, said to be the most beautiful beach in Brazil. I'll let the photos do the rest of the talking...
