Not alot to say about machu pichu really.you are obliged by peruvian law to visit it and also the 'travelers code' insists on it so we had to do it.its not cheap but we're clever so we paid way less than everyone else in our hostel.rad. staying in cusco which is here primarily to get foreigners to machu pichu.so its well good. Despite beign incan and 'ancient' its actually only 500 years old. by now i expect ancient to mean at least a thousand years.i have high standards.ive lived i a house almost as old as machu pichu.win.
the incas only lived there for 100 years until the spanglish came and murdered everyone to make baby jesus happy and the city was forgotten about until very recently. apparently 3000 people visit it a day and this might be having a detrimental effect on the site. funnily enough.they're doing studies to check out if all the fat westerners (and there are literally thousands of obese white people there) are pushing the stones out by walking on it. i thought this was funny.
the town next to it, Aquas Calientes was pure tourist $$$.the town was actually nice and small and
situated in the most awesome way ever.COMPLETELY surrounded by huge green mountains on all sides, the town borders were the mountains, it was crazy, they loomed over you like gods own skyscrapers with no gentle incline, just straight up.
anyway, it was pretty. got up at 5 am to walk up the mountain to machu pichu, its all gnarly huge stone stairs and rocks and im not very fit, especialy at dawn but we did it by being so rad. climbed into the condor tomb which might have been rude but it was cool in there,.
The whole thing was cool if not a bit underwhelming, alot of work has been done there, its basically a reconstruction it seems. some of the stonework was mental though, the cutting and fitting was soo fine and tight, there are no gaps at all between the stones in the main temple. no wheels were used either which is neat.its not very big and it bits kinda look weird, not fake but remade at least.still, it was awesome and im glad i saw it, i just didnt feel any of the 15th century magic the tour guides were trying to sell.
go there, look
around, hike.its neat.
