Heading for a night on the town! It’s Sunday night here and we’ve logged in another fun weekend here in Manly! While Mary Neill was at work on Friday, the four of us decided it would be a good day for a movie. We were clearly all missing our Southern roots, so we found a theatre that was showing ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ and went to the afternoon show. Although I don’t think it’ll be stealing the show at next year’s Oscars, we all got our longing for some good ol Southerness (word?). Julia had to go in to work on Friday night, so the rest of us made some dinner and used our new dvd player to watch some Friends!! MN & I made our famous burritos, while Elizabeth went through her probably 20th bowl of cereal for the week…Lynds made some less than memorable spaghetti…it’s been quite an adjustment getting used to the different spices over here and Lynds’s spaghetti was a prime example.
Julia got home a bit later and informed us that she gained 2 business cards on her shift….haha, everyone’s lovin that southern accent down here! Julia got ready and we all headed out for a fun fun night! Our first stop was our
Julia & Me
Saturday afternoon fun! fave place the Steyne. It’s a bit strange here…the main nights that people go out here are Thursday, Saturday & Sunday, a little different than the US. However, there were still a good amount of people around this night. We made our way upstairs and hung out for a while…nothing too exciting to report there…after a bit, we all decided to find a new hot spot. Next stop was the New Brighton Hotel. This place was fun fun! There were lots of people and they were playing some good music. We did a bit of dancing and met a few new folks at this place. After dancing our hearts out for a while, we decided to change venues again and go back to the Steyne. This ended up being our last stop before calling it a night!
We had planned on going into Sydney Saturday, but we woke up a bit later than planned haha! It had been a long week. MN & I, with the help of Julia, made some yummy omelettes! This was important because it marked the first Saturday in Manly that we have not eaten at Four Olives (gasp)! It wasn’t quite up to par to Four Olives, but I must say it was pretty dang good! It was a bit overcast, so we spent most of the morning watching more and more Friends! This dvd player has been quite a nice addition to our apartment, as we have now already watched 2 full seasons of Friends haha!
At about 3 in the afternoon, MN, Elizabeth, Julia & I decided to walk around the markets in Manly. They are here every Saturday, and when they come people are everywhere! It’s a lot of fun. There’s also a lot to offer at all the stands! Right now, we’re all eyeing some Australian made UGGs, I tried them on, gosh they are so comfortable! The only purchases of the day were by Elizabeth & Julia, who both got sunglasses. I only say this because there is a totally different sunglasses style going on over here! It seems everyone has big sunglasses….just look at Julia’s, who now looks like a true Australian, and you’ll know what I’m talking about.
After looking around the markets for a bit, we decided to indulge in another Australian custom: eating lunch/dinner outside mid-afternoon. It’s crazy, we always see people on the weekend just chilling out at these cute restaurants, sitting outside enjoying the day. We picked a place right along the beach called Sino. It ended up being a most fantastic decision! I had some of the most yummy fish & chips I’ve ever tasted; Julia & MN had a most delicious chicken focaccia & Elizabeth had some grilled Barramundi (an Australian whitefish) that tasted so good! Lastly, we had some tasty champagne haha! We ended up staying at the restaurant for about three hours just enjoying everything about it! It was so much fun. The beach was beautiful & the weather perfect! Definitely an Australian tradition I wanna get used to.
We made it home just in time to watch the Hurricane Katrina Oprah special much to our happiness. It’s been tough being so far away while this horrible tragedy has been going on right near our homes, so it was great to see this and feel somewhat the magnitude of this catastrophe. The show made us a bit sad & tired so we called it a night pretty early.
Even though we went to bed early, everyone slept in a bit on today. After cleaning up the apartment a bit (trust me, five girls in two bedrooms makes this apartment not so clean pretty quickly) we wanted to try the beach. It was a beautiful day, but still a bit chilly outside. MN, Julia & I, desperate to get our summer tans back, braved the cold and laid out for a bit. Although we thought it was cold, people were all over the beach. I know you are all probably very sick of me saying this, but the beach is soooo beautiful here! I thought I was spoiled growing up in Destin as a child, but this is definitely on par with the Gulf of Mexico, if not much better! Lynds & I headed down to our little surf school for an afternoon lesson. Boy was that a mistake! It was like the wind started gusting right as we put our wetsuits on…..in one of my last entries I talked about the waves taking us for a ride. It we thought it was bad that day, we were in for quite a surprise this day! The ocean was really choppy and the waves were the biggest we’ve seen yet. I felt as though I was battling the waves over 75% of the time…not too much fun! Haha, but a great experience in the least…still trying to be patient learning this new sport, it definitely doesn’t come so easy, especially on these rough days!
While we were surfing, the other three girls were apparently missing our weekend fix of Four Olives and went and had of course a most delicious meal at our fave little deli. Lynds & I, feeling like we had been beaten up went in for a shift at good ol Ribs & Rumps. Now we’re all sitting here getting our fill of American tv….Law & Order, which of course seems like it comes on 6 nights a week haha….well, that’s about it for this weekend; hope everyone is doing great!

great times
I can't believe Julia bought more sunglasses! She has a sunglass fetish. I am envious of your lives right now. So happy you are having so much fun. Thankyou for keeping this journal, Caroline and thanks for the pics.
