The story so far..... I will simply say that Colombia is a must do for any travellers in SA, forget the crap you read on dangers etc, it no worse than any other country.
A lot of this negative hipe seems to come from US media, which firstly being US media, will have little impartiality and is also intended to deter US citizens from visiting the country. This is definitely obvious, compared with the amount of USAers in Equador, and is a welcome change!

So anyway, after a night or 2 in Popayan, a beautiful colonial era town, with the unfortuneate draw back of having every street look the same, because thats what colonial towns do, I have set off for a place called San Agustin. This is known for artifacts of indiginous people predating the colonial era.

Now, I must say, holes in the ground and stone statues can kind of look the same, but for me the beauty of this place was the people I met.

Call it luck and my uncanny abilility to find social events, but after what was looking like a less than average night in a salsa bar, I went for a walk asked a few people and ended up in a kick ass pub, full of locals. Before I know it, the bar is shut, and our new friends have arranged for a lock in. Think we left 9am! Messy.

Wind forward 3 days, Im walking down a street of a town of 20000 people and find I cant make it 5 mins before meeting someone, i've met over a bottle of rum in the last few nights. This country knows how to Rumpa and from who I have met so far, really make you feel welcome. There is something definitely different about Colombia, and its different in a good way! Time to hit Bogota!

Completly agree Colombia is a MUST DO
HI elluco, I loved your entry about Colombia. I have been looking this everywhere in the internet and only just now I found this page. I am Colombian marriend to an English guy and we live in England. After many years trying to convince my husband to go to Colombia I have finally done it. We will be going nex January, but he is still a bit wary as it is obvious after the bad press my country gets. But your comments about your experiences there has helped so much not only to my husband but to all those advising him againts it. Thanks very much and the best of luck for you. Olga
