surfing Byron Bay
The buzz was so great we kept going till the sun disappearedOver the past 3 months I have been cruising around the Sunshine coast in my van. Two friends came over to join me from Germany and from New Zealand. Anna, Ilana and I cruized the coast from Noosa Heads down to Byron Bay, W.A.
All up it has been a 6 month venture in Queensland. It was supposed to be only 2 weeks to visit my parents in their new settlment, that grew to a month so I could stay for my brothers birthday, and then it somehow extended out to 6 whole months! (with other holidays inbetween ofcourse; to Darwin and Hamilton, NZ).
There is no better place to learn to surf than Queensland. Many of my spare hours were spent at the beach, my favourite place. Bought my own board and met some great peops and off we went.
There is a neat spot on a point 15 minutes walk around a track in Noosa Heads. And if you dont mind the nudies, go to Alexandria bay which is again a 15 minute walk to a bay tucked away in Noosa. The idea of a surf in the nud sounds somewhat appealing actually, but the water temp gets

keeping in touch is easier than it looks down to 16/17 degrees in winter so its too cold, besides that im still chicken with a bunch of others around gawking.
My fave beach was Alexandra beach (its right next to Mooloolabah) because of its surf ofcourse, but also because it was so convenient for me to get to from where I was staying. Cotton tree is another neat spot, and well I could go on and on. Dont be fooled by the name surfers paradise, in my opinion the sunshine coast is much more attractive, for starters there is way less peops crowding the beach out.
I found some work on the farms around Glasshouse Mountains at the strawberry farms where i did some planting back in April, this time picking the fruit, But mainly packing them into plastic punnets. I was earning decent money for a farm girl with no experience in the trade. With a commission rate of 20 cents per punnet sounds pretty crap, but in actual fact it is any thing but. I was earning up to AU$36 per hour... not bad!
It gave me the opportunity to save enough for my trip to Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia in a small amount
of time. EXCELLENT!
Things I'll miss the most about Queensland...
My Mum, Kevin, and the "snake shack" (their little house on a big jungle-like block of land)
My ozy mates I came close with, the endless summer days even through what they call a winter, milo the neighbours cat, gelato icecreams, my van 'Willy' (long story to that one), the bird life; Kookaburras in the evening sunsets and the adorable wee birds that woke us up by banging into the bedroom window every morning at five minutes to eight (I wont be missing other forms of wildlife though such as the pet carpet snakes that lived inside the house on the beams, or the yellow bellied and brown snakes in the garden, and i def wont miss the spiders!), and last but not least I'll ofcourse miss the beaches and the awsome surf.
