Today we left Lima for Cusco, which was a plesant short 55 minute flight. Cusco is such a popular destination that there are 10 flights per day (on LAN Airlines) that go from Lima to Cusco. We arrived safely and were greeted by Johnathan, a representative of the Spanish school. Cusco is an increadible city located high in the mountains. We were warned that we may experience altitude sickness, since Cusco is located at approx. 3300m above sea level, however, we are happy to report that all is well, and neither Kevin nor I feel a thing (knock on wood). We are taking pills for the altitude, and drinking plenty of the suggested local coca tea.

We are settled into our homestay, and we think it is going to be a great experience as the familieĀ“s english is about as good as our spanish. Man-o-man do I wish I had taken advantage of more opportunities to learn spanish, but hopefully we are able to pick it up.

The homestay is about a 45 minute walk from the school where we are going to learn spanish, but taxis are cheap. It costs only 2 sol (or $0.75) by taxi. I think we will be opting for the walking option, however, drivers here are a bit crazy. They use their horn instead of the breaks at intersections, and everything we learned about pedestrians having the right-away is not applicable here.

That is all for tonight. Hope all is well where you are.

Sooo Jealous!!
Hey there Joelle and Kevin... Ryan gave me the link for this travel blog... what a great idea. I am so jealous that you are travelling around South America... I loved the time I spent down there. Good luck with the taxi drivers.. and be sure to always look both ways 3 times before crossing the roads... have fun 'gringos'.

that kind of......
Ok, if I read your blog correctly, since arriving in Cusco, the two of you have been in a drug induced state where there are no ill effects from the altitude? Hey, what do you think'coca tea' is made from? Enjoy! -M
