This´ll be entry number one then.

You still with us? Good, then read on...

First things first: To the mums - journey to Quito was fine, no major dramas or issues. We both had splitting headaches by the time we landed, which we put down to either lack of sleep, 13 hours flying, or having to endure the last 45 minutes of Pirates of the Caribbean 3 even though it was terrible we needed to know how it ended. (Poorly, if you´re interested.) Bridget has found an alternative cure-all if sausage rolls are unavailable - Werther's Originals. It's true, just one of those creamy morish sweets and a headache is a thing of the past.

Our room at the hostel is great (see attached photo, hopefully). We even get towels and soap provided! And we got a free cervesa each when we first arrived.

(Now the tourist reportage bit). We walked round Quito's "old town" today, which boasts some fantastic architecture, mainly the churches and cathedrals of course. We weren't allowed in some of them (something to do with "mass" I think they called it) so we had to make do with being fleeced by a postcard

salesman instead. (Him - "please take, they're free... they're free", Me - "er, OK, gracias", Him - "just a small donation for the poor local children?...")

Also went up the cable car to a height of 4000 metres. Fantastic views over the whole city (Quito is a long, thin city squeezed into a valley at the base of a number of mountains and volcanoes) but it was a wee bit nippy up there).

The food so far has been great, the taxis are dirt cheap but are somewhat reminiscent(?) of being Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder, the people are really friendly and it hasn't rained yet, so things can't be bad.

Hope everyone is doing fine.

Bye for now
J (current author) and B (currently asleep in bed, surprise surprise).
