So off to the islands today, the Perhentian Islands to be specific and Perhentian Kecil in particular. Thankfully Vicky thought to book accomodation ahead in the morning or we would have been stuck, we got the last room available at that resort (I call it a resort but it certainly isn't what it sounds like!!!) We shared a taxi with a girl from England who had been to the islands before so we managed to pick her brains for a few things to do whilst there and also got some unwelcome news on our next border crossing (more on that later). After the taxi, we took a speed boat to the island and speed really was of the essence, the driver really wasnt into the comfort factor for passengers, it felt like being in a washing machine. Basically the boat was a small hull with two enormous outboard motors mounted on it. Half an hour later we pulled up onto out secluded beach to a very happy sight. A number of small huts lining a little cove around a very nice looking beach. We jumped out onto the beach and got checked it, complete with complementary drink and went to find

our hut. It was certainly basic but nice enough and looked out over the sea. We did later find out to the cost of all the food we took that we weren't alone in there, at different times being visited by squirrels, bats (yes, flying round in the room) and a mouse (who i found looking up at me in the middle of the night).

Our first full day and we went for a walk over to long beach which we were told wazs a nice easy walk. The first part turned out to be not so much! Clambering over large boulders, through the jungle and along beaches we passed several abondoned huts and an old resort now empty, but no easy path! We made it to Coral beach which wasn't quite the island paridise with lots of construction going on so continued across the island to Long beach. Long beach was very different to our own, much larger (obviously) and with several resorts and beach cafes lining it. We spent the day in and out of the water and bought some goggles to admire the wildlife underwater. On the walk back we saw a vary large lizzard which

must have been almost 4ft in length, I think it is a comodore maybe but I'm no expert! Later that afternoon after arriving back at our beach I decided to do a bit more wildlife spotting on our own beach. Among the rocks I managed to see an eel, loads of fish and one of those discovery channel fish with wavy sides (like a tutu) and a beardy looking face. That evening we retired to our new beachfront (and animal-less hut) to relax and feel sorry for our burned selves (we were very careful!!!)

Day three and us and a German couple (everyone else where we were was French? We decided it must be the first place in the French guidebook) went snorkelling around the island. We went to Turtle point where we saw a large turtle swimming on the surface of the water and also another on the sea bed. Unfortunately there were no sharks at shark point but loads of jelly-fish (hundreds, but they don't sting) and loads of fish and some beautiful coral covering the sea floor. We also went to fishermans point near the fishing village on the island and where they feed the fish from. I have never seen so many fish in my life, everywhere you looked there were hundreds and hundreds of fish, all different colours. Some looked like zebras, some were brilliant blue and some were really tiny. I'm sure one tried to take a bite out of me aswell! After lunch we went to the final snorkelling point which has to be one of the most spectacular things I have ever seen. There was coral reef everywhere and again hundreds of fish, we must have been in the water for almost an hour there and never got bored! The best part was getting to see Nemo though...or clown fish as others would call it. It was bright orange and kept darting in and out of the reef and when I swam down towards it it started to swim out towards me.

The boat back was much more pleasant than the one there and we managed to haggle down our taxi back to Kota Bharu. We spent much of today planning our onwards travel to Laos, we have had to change plans after hearing about trouble on the border and that there is some local terrorist activity. Instead we are now going back down to Kuala Lumpur to fly across the border, a pain, but safety first...

Nemo!!
Yeh, good to have you back on line! As I have said before - beware David Attenborough - Aaron is becoming a wildlife expert, what with his tutu fish and meeting Nemo!! As you are now so friendly with the wildlife we'll have to start leaving your bedroom window open so our local squirrel will have somewhere to sleep in the winter..
