Hehe,
It's me again. I am still in New Zealand. Still playing rugby and still working at the same ol' cafe but I had a few adventures since I last wrote. First of all, my rugby team made it into Div. 1 (top 4 teams in the league) which is quite the achievement but since then, we have yet to win a game. It kinda sucks and I am always sore from making so many tackles but I guess it'll be beneficial in the end. Also, I knocked out a girl in a game just by tackling her, woupsy! I've also started training with the Canterbury team (equivalent to provincial teams at home I guess). It's been good learning and hardcore fitness. I should learn soon if I make the final cut or not. Work is same ol boring stuff but I've been making coffees much more lately so I'm getting pretty good. People drink flat-whites and long-blacks here as well as the more common cappucinos, lattes and americanos so it's a bit different than home.
We had our first court session (we only call it kangaroo court in Canada I think) and it was nothing compared to the ones led by Westie in Korea, he is definitely the best judge ever! At one point, they made us eat Weet-bix (very dry rectangular cereal part of every Kiwi's breakfast) without milk, that was evil!
We also had a bus trip, a very common occurrence here for any occasion, especially good on birthdays. So the day started with us losing to the top team 32-6 (pretty good score for us!) and then getting team of the week for our prowess and being in Div. 1. That means we get 10 free jugs (ie. pitchers) of beer at the clubrooms.
After making our entrance dressed in our theme "Uniforms" outfits, we drank the beer and climbed on the bus around 7:30pm. It was 30$, booze and bus provided. Imagine a men and a women's rugby team, lots of alcohol, loud music, no rules and no insurance concerns! We drove around the country side and hit 5 different pubs before being dumped downtown. A lot of fun and very interesting concept! It was on the same night as the New Zealand vs. Canada rugby game so you can imagine how happy I was to see the homeland perform so well in the first half. I was definitely the only person cheering for Canada though.
I've been getting every second Sunday off because of the Canterbury practices from 9:30-11 so I get my afternoons to explore. One Sunday, Paula (my team captain) and I headed to the Antartic Centre for a little tourist attraction. I really want to go there one day so it was quite fun to get an idea even though it's a very expensive tourist trap. See photos for more details.
I have the next 4 days off and my coach lent me an old car so I am off to finally explore some of this gorgeous country. It's a bit of a challenge to drive around since they drive on the opposite side of the road as us and on the opposite side of the car. On top of that, the car is manual so I have to shift gears with my left hand, so weird! I also tend to start the windshield wipers everytime I try to indicate which way I am turning. Wish me luck!
Talk to you soon, Love you all,
Marie-Eve
