Roskilde

Roskilde

I was really excited when I put up this blog because Rockilde wasn't listed in the cities of Denmark, so I added it. I was the first to put up a blog on Roskilde and get it on the travel blog map! To go where no travel blogger has gone before....

I went to Roskilde to see the Viking Museum where the remains of 5 viking ships are on display. The museum also went into the history of the vikings and how and where they lived. There had been a long held belief that there was a sunken viking ship in a shallow area in the bay outside of Roskilde. Upon investigating these rumors they found out that there was not one but five viking ships that had been purposely sunk there for protection reasons for the city of Roskilde. The museum talked about these five viking ships and their discovery, excavation and restoration. Just to give an example of how far reaching the vikings were, one of the sunken ships was built in Dublin.

There were recreated replicas of the five ships that were in the Harbour, showing how the ships would have looked before they were sunk. On the weekend they offered cruises on one of their viking ships. The largest replica was going to be leaving for a trip to Dublin so that they could get a better idea of how the vikings lives were at sea, as well as how long it would take. There was also a archaeological workshop where they explain how the wood and artifacts are treated and what work is done to them when they are excavated. The wood has to go through massive treatment with it being kept in water. The whole restoration process is very intense and involves many steps. Actually, because it is such an extensive process many ancient boat wrecks are left under the water unless they are in danger.

There was a display of two ships which we could walk on that showed what they would look like with their sails and supplies on board. But the coolest part of this display were the viking costumes that we could try on and really look like a viking. I dressed up like a viking!!!! I sweet talked a few people to take my picture and actually got a few good ones!! I was so stoked, these are probably some of my favorite pictures that I got of me in all of Europe, on my last day there.

On my way back to the train station I stopped at the Roskilde Cathedral which was a huge church (under major restoration- imagine that). The first chuch erected on the site was built by Harold Bluetooth and then a few churhes later is the one we see now. Most of the Danish royalty has been buried in the church with some very impressive and beautiful tombs. When I went into the church they gave me a map- that's how much stuff is in this church.
