Guest House
One...yes just one of the guest houses Day 39 – Thursday – San Simeon, California Another different and interesting day for us today.
We headed out of San Francisco this morning (via the crookest street!!!) to Hearst Castle. Have to admin NOT my favorite drive at all and it ended up taking us a good hour or two longer than we had expected to get to the Castle (in time for our booked tour).
Not to mention, we had to drive through army land to get to the coast (an experience in itself, we even saw a tank!!!) and gawwwd, we traversed the longest and windiest road EVER (forget Lombard Street). I swear, the turns/curves/winds went on for about an hour and I was SICK by the end of it!!!
Thankfully once we got out of the car I started to feel better, and we did the tour of Hearst Castle. For those who arent sure what it's all about...here's some information I pinched...
Hearst Castle – The Enchanted Hill WM. RANDOLPH HEARST
By 1947, Hearst and Morgan had created an estate of 165 rooms and 127 acres of gardens, terraces, pools and walkways.
The estate’s magnificent main house,
The view
Looking out over the water “Casa Grande,” and three guesthouses are of Mediterranean Revival style, with the imposing towers of Casa Grande being inspired by a Spanish cathedral. The blending of the architectural style with the surrounding land, and Hearst’s superb European and Mediterranean art collections, was so seamless that world-renowned architectural historian, Lord John Julius Norwich, was moved to say that “Hearst Castle is a palace in every sense of the word.”
WOW...the property that Hearst put together was amazing and he has an amazing collection of art, and ancient egyptian and roman pieces but we came away thinking he had a serious case of "short man syndrome" (only he wasnt really short!) it just seemed too much and he was spending his money just for the sake of it.
Ah well. Tonight we're staying in San Simeon, we had a delicious dinner and are getting an early night before heading to LA tomorrow - WOOOO!!!!
