This morning I felt it was important to have a morning alone. I left the pension around 8am and called Brian and kelli. It was good to hear familiar voices. Nothing was opened yet after finishing my phone calles so I took a walk around the lake and port to capture undisturbed images. Morning is best for light and privacy. Many photos would later be filled by tourists, locals, and autos.
Upon booking ferry tickets to Santornin, we spoke briefly with the agent. The computers were down and we were unable to reserve our return trip so would again have to return. HE said that unfortunately he would be here tomorrow, working, going nowhere. I didn't think to ask, at that time, where he would want to go. I think I will when we go back.
I've asked one shopworker if he liked livign here. He laughed a little and said that this is a big island and they have everything here. He said that sometimes it's hard because of the work and there's not much here but tourists. I assume he meant as a source of money. I wonder how it must be to rely on the money of
travellers who are usually selective about where to spend, seeing all cafes and shops offer very similar products. It must be hard to constantly sell or hope someone buys. I've tried not to take pictures of people here to allow them their privacy, though a few times it was hard to hold back.
I haven't said anything about auto safety. I don't know how much the helmet rule is enforced here or what the safety guidlelines are. I've seen a family of three on a scooter. mom, dad, and dad holding the baby with one hand while steering with the other. No helmets. Passengers have not been wearing helmets and only some drivers. In cars, families get in with babies or young children and there is no car seat to protect them. The child is usually sitting in the passengers lap who is usually not wearing a seat belt. There's a thing called "overtaking" where you can use the opposite lane to pass cars. there are many close calls of head on collisions.
Tomorrow evening, we will take a ferry out to Santorini where we will spend two nights before heading back to Heraklion. We'll stay there for three nights,
then fly to London for 2, and back home. Only eight nights left. Almost half way done with our trip.
There is a marketplace open this morning just up the hill. I'll return to the room for Lynda to see if she wants to go. Today is a beautiful day so we can visit the beach. Yesterday it rained off and on for most of the day. One shop owner told us to be careful because the rain comes from Africa and carries sulfur with it. I saw signs of this on a white envelope I was holding when the watermarks dried to reveal a yellowish-brown dust.
