WE are in Agios Nicholaos on the NE end of Crete. We heard about this place from a man sitting next to me on the plane and a woman in front of us. We had decided to leave Plakias because I felt there was nothing there for us. Last night, we checked the bus schedule and decided to leave on the first bus out this morning. It was worth the five hour bus tour and three bus transfer. This city is just large enough to explore and just small enough to be less aggressive. The people are much more polite than the other cities. they don't push you into eating their food and staying longer than you're comfortable. We've found out that that is just the greek culture... to eat ALL on your plate and stay a very long time.. sometimes for hours just "loitering" and keeping the seats warm. In america, we're always trying to turn those tables quick and are used to eating and running. We stumbled upon three free drinks tonight all because we were from California. Apparently they don't get too many of us Californians out here. I'm slightly amazed at that. Twice, Fresh Prince's "California"

The pension had a kitchen so we could cook instead of always eating out. Cheapest thing? Spaghetti!
song was played for us.
We found this wonderful pension called "Mary's rooms to let". The lady who takes care of this place greeted us warmly with a glass of orange juice and a traditional greek snack called "koopepeea" or stuffed vine leaves. It's a wrap of a grape vine leaf with rice, meat, and mint herbs inside. We were starving after not having eaten since 8am and it now being past 1pm. She was very sweet and told us about all the places we could go to while we were here. THis side of the island seems to offer more than the west side. After settling our debt with her, we took a walk through the city along the port. I found a map that I had been searching for for 5 euros. We plan on taking a cruise to Santorini on Friday if there is room left on the boat. Tomorrow we'll most likely explore and lay in the sun.
I'm happy we decided to come here considering how nice everyone is. We've met many people from GB, someone from Georgia (the country by Turkey), and as we were walking down the sidewalk, a gentleman even pulled a

chair aside so we could get by. What hospitality. Tomorrow, we will go back to the places we visited today to see the people we met tonight. There is a girl named Amy who is from Scotland who was talking to me about going to SF. She said that one day she'd like to take the drive up the coast. I think she meant highway one.
We plan to stay here until Thursday and go back to Heraklion. In plakias, our days seemed to drag by. Here, they're gone before we know it.

Co-rri!
Hi Sister! So glad that you made the decision to venture out of Plakias. It sounds like that was the perfect choice. Mary's rooms look so cute. I'm glad that you got a picture of her. Did you tell her that Grandma gets mad when you take pictures of her? "Co-rri!!!" :) Enjoy your time in Agios Nikolaos, Seester! Stay safe. I love you.
