North Platte Nebraska drew us in because it has the worlds largest active train yard. And there's a giant viewing platform of the whole yard, so that you can oversee all of the hustle and bustle. Or at least there was...or there will be. When we got there there was a big sign showing the plans for the future overlook and museum, replacing the old rickety one. So, we had the luck of being right smack in the middle of construction.
Onward we go, down to Kinsley, Kansas. Kinsley's claim to fame is its exact location (in miles) halfway between New York City and San Francisco. They also have a free museum run by the historical society full of everything you could ever dream of from the turn of the 20th century. Tehre were cases of clothing and old corn threshing wagons down to old matchbook collections. The museum was even complete with our own historical society tour guide 😊.
Next we pushed on toward Texas, passing right by Greensburg, Kansas. You've all seen Greensburg on the news...it's where the tornado recently took out 95% of the town. The highway through was shut down, but we passed by
a couple of miles away. There were dump trucks in a steady line moving away from the town full of debris, carting it all off to a giant bonfire. You can almost see in the photos that all that's left is a big grainery.
We passed through Oklahoma...nothing on the agenda here...and kept on trucking into Texas toward Amarillo and Cadillac Ranch. Cadillac Ranch is another roadside sculpture, made entirely out of...you guessed it...Cadillacs. They've all been upended and buried hulfway in the dirt at a slant. They're multicolored due to visitors handiwork...there are spraypaint cans tucked into the nooks and crannies of the cars that you can take out and tag them with, stating who you are and where you're from. Fun stuff!
Next we're headed to Fort Worth to spend some time with Paul's grandmother and family. We'll be relaxing, visiting, and heading to Six Flags as well as a weekend in Galveston (where Paul will be deep sea fishing!) We'll hopefully post up pictures of our time in Fort Worth next Monday, June 11th, as we plan to head out to Memphis on Tuesday. Thanks for checking in!!!!
