Mount Rushmore, Wall and Carhenge

Pop Quiz! Are you a good American? Let's find out:

Who are the 4 presidents on Mount Rushmore? I'll even let you cheat and look at the picture if you have to. Tick tock, tick tock....

Okay, so you definitely got Lincoln and Washington. Maybe even Jefferson. Did you get Roosevelt? Well, either A+, good for you, or...shame on you! 😊

Also notice the excellent picture where you can see up the presidents' noses. Worth every penny.

What a random monument out in South Dakota. And that's about all we have to say about that, other than...if you rent a car you really should A) have a basic understanding of US road laws and B) be able to read. We may or may not be referring to the minivan full of tourists who were driving straight at us at the entrance, and then couldn't figure out how to back up. So we stopped and waited 3 minutes and took a picture of a goat. Haha...😊

Then, on to Wall, South Dakota. Wall is an interesting place in that it's a drug store...and also a touristy gifty shop thing. In 1931 the Interstate was built and bypassed the little drugstore by about 1/2 mile. So they put out a billboard that read "free ice water" to get hot and weary travelers to stop. The sign was such a big success that they put in gift shops, a cafe, and all kinds of shops and silly sculptures, slowly taking over the whole block. They also started putting signs up further and further away and just about every interstate in the country. When we were about 200 miles away we started seeing signs reading: "Kids bored? Wall Drug.", "Giant Jackalope! Wall Drug" or "Coffee 5 Cents. Wall Drug". Apparently there are signs as far away as Florida, stating the mileage to Wall. We stopped and rode the giant jackalope (the fictional Antelope Jackrabbit), posed for pictures, had some lunch and perused the cowboy giftshops and old time photos.

Off to Nebraska! We passed through the Badlands (Badlands Nat'l Park), which was a bunch of rock in the middle of the South Dakota prairies. I'm sure we're doing it a big injustice by calling it a bunch of rock but...to all those offended peoples, we apologise, and pass on through. Our first, last and only stop in Nebraska was Carhenge. Yep, it's a reproduction of stonehenge made entirely out of automobiles. The artist even went so far as to go to Stonehenge, take all the measurements, and reproduce it to his best abilities. Kooky Kitchy Fun! I guess this is where auto enthusiasts should call their mecca?
