Meeting the stars in LAMeeting the stars in LAMeeting the stars in LA

Me and the legend that is Elmo
Having come traveling to see new cultures and other parts of the world I was convinced I wouldn't like LA, where we had a quick 3 day stop before flying into Central America and Mexico however a few days later and I really was sad to leave, I had a really good time and enjoyed the atmosphere which was much more relaxed and not a pretentious as I assumed Hollywood would be. Saying that we did stick to the tourist areas rather than to dodgy parts of LA so my view of the city is slightly skewed.

After touching down late afternoon we found our hostel on Melrose to be in a really interesting part of the city walking distance from most major attractions and also found due to the exchange rate we could eat out and drink out very cheaply so headed out to the famous Sunset strip for a taste of LA nightlife. Everyone we met was friendly and we were able to move club to club taking in famous nightspots with ease which was a very pleasant surprise and had a really good night out.

The next day we headed over to the farmers market

I could have put up Elvis or the Beatles instead this is Journeys star just for Dan!
then onto Hollywood Blvd and the walk of fame with all the other tourists. We were persuaded, after the price was lowered significantly, to do a tour of Hollywood and Beverly Hills which was actually good fun and really in formative of the area taking in loads of famous homes such as the Osborneā€™s, Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise and of course the house from the fresh prince of Bel Air! The cars and wealth on show is unbelievable and crazy having spent so much time in areas of poverty in South East Asia but this is LA. Afterwards we went and took in a film at the famous Chinese Theatre where all the movie premiers take place as we really wanted to look around inside. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the most famous cinema in the world is actually c heaper than the bloody Trafford center cinema! Afterwards we went for a few quiet Sunday drinks on the strip and went to the Viper club, which was owned, by Johnny Depp and the place where River Phoenix died. After chatting to the barman for a while we were put on the guest list for the following night which gave me a great claim to fame - I was a VIP and got free drinks at Johnny Depp's club, we are personal friends - ok maybe the last bits not true but it was great never the less. Later on as we were leaving the club we got chatting to one of the bands who had played and were invited back to their flat in Hollywood for more drinks and ended up having another late one but again showing the laid back friendliness I didn't expect to find.

For our final day we explored Venice Beach and Santa Monica Pier and people watched for a while taking in all the beautiful but mainly downright weird people, it has to be seen to be believed before going to a proper American Steak house to enjoy some good old western food before back to the rice in Central America.

I have been looking forward to Mexico for a long time and am delighted to be here now and see some more culture however the 3 days in LA really was great fun and very random!
