So we flew from Bangkok to Ko Samui and headed for Lamai beach. We had heard from many a source that Lamai was not quite as touristy or busy as Chaiweng and they were right. We were looking for a place called Beer's House (very aptly named). After a ending up at the other end of Lamai beach with not one tax driver knowing this place at all (I think that they thought we were stupid Aussie tourists trying to sound funny, but to be fair there were about 50-60 sets of bungalows on Lamai beach), we finally decided it was time to get a map. Very helpful. We arrived at Beer's easily and within minutes were enjoying a nice cold Tiger beer.

For the rest of our stay we were known by Ben, the owner, as the Tiger Beer couple. We didn't even dare to drink Singha at the Bungalows because the night after we arrived they went out and bought a whole case of Tiger to fill up the fridge...so much pressure! The bungalows were very primitive, but at least they had their own bathroom and a floor which is definitely a step up from Mexico, and they were right on the beach. I realised fairly early on in Thailand that I would have to get over my toliet phobia and I did very well. Who new that if you tip a bucket of water into a toilet that it will automatically flush. Amazing...I was never very good at science. Anyway, don't get me started on toilets otherwise the rest of the blog will go downhill and the blog will need to be renamed www.travelblog.org/JanesWorldwideToiletStories.

We decided the hire a motorbike and drive around the island on the first day. It was a lot of fun...glad I wasn't driving, and a good way to see the island. So after cruising around for a while seeing some waterfalls, having lunch etc. Adam decided that he would like to go to the top of the island so that we could take in the vista. The only problem was that we had gone past the two main access roads. But, map-boy had managed to find another road that would take us there. I should have been wary given that the main roads on the island were quite dodgy, but Adam assured me that the little hired motorbike could get

us up the side of the steep mountain...I won't say anymore as I do not want mum to have a heart attack, but needless to say, distaster ensued, and the situation ended with Jane jumping off the bike and refusing to go any further and both of us ending up with multiple grazes. Anyway, Adam didn't make it to the top of the mountain and grumpy and post-wedding sick Jane was taken back to the beach for a lie down and a Tiger. Aah, it's a hard life.

We decided to drag ourselves off the beach for a day trip to Ang Thong National Marine Park for a day of snorkelling, kayaking and cruising...beautiful. Other than that we mainly ate and drank on Lamai... some things never change. Some amazing food...great seafood. We also managed to find the best duck-man on the street...heaven. Adam also fulfilled one of his dreams and dragged me along to a Thai cooking class on the island. It was just the two of us and Song took us first to the market and then we cooked the following:

Soem Tham Thai - Thai Style Green Papaya Salad
Tod Maan Pla - Fish Cakes
Panang Moo - Panang Curry with Pork (weird how pork is moo in Thai!)
Thom Yum Goong - Hot & Sour Soup

Really enjoyed the class plus we got to eat all of the yummy food that we cooked. I decided that is is the way to cook, have someone else prepare the ingredients and wash up for you.
