thought i'd share a little story...

so this morning as i was walking to the tree nursery with nicholaus (the man whose teaching me all about reforestation) he informed me that we would be cutting the horns off of several goats to keep them jabbing in to one another. i asked, with hesitation, if it would hurt the goats and he said yes, but it was for their own good. now, sawing the horns off goats does not appeal to me because i m a vegetarian and i don't like the idea of hurting animals. so i followed along thinking to myself that i would just stand in the sidelines and observe horrifying process. as we were peering in to the goat's pen i heard nicholaus say "fleas". i aske him to repeat what he said because with his ankole accent and all i have trouble understanding him, and i was confused, what did he mean fleas. he said again, with a little more worry "fleas!" and pointed to my pants, which were completely covered in little black bugs who were slowly making their way up my legs! now, you'll be proud of me, i didn't scream or jump or anything i just made my way back to my house with nicholaus shouting at my back to take off my pants, not inside my house, and sok them in water. so i quickly made my way to my porch and ripped off my pants. only as i was throwing them on the grass did i notice my neighbor vinny walking down the path back to her house. i was suprised when she calmly asked "fire ants?", and i shouted back no, fleas, she said "sorry, sorry". i quickly filled my wash basin with water from the jerry can and soaked the hell out of those pants. i added laundry detergent to make sure the fleas were not only drowned, but poisoned (so much for not causing harm to animals!). later i was sitting on one of my chairs, reminissing (i can't spell that word, but sound it out) about the whole thing when out of the corner of my eye i saw a little black thing jump from my shoulder to the chair -somehow i'd carried some fleas in! that's when i ripped open my backpack and found my mosquito spray, which can also be used against fleas, and coated my house in a not-so- fine layer of poison. though it chokes me to be in there, i don't think the fleas will take over my house.

an eventful day....

hope all is well with everyone. i'm going to see the rwenzori mountains this weekend (mountains of the moon -look it up). i'll try to post pictures when i get back.

miss and love you all! -b
