Shashi enjoying a top notch swim
If you have spent the last three days being bored at work and not doing much with your Saturday, you may not want to hear about the great time I just had, so you better stop reading now!
OK, don't say I didn't warn you...! So, the last three days we have been touring Fraser Island, which is the world's largest sand island, just off the East Coast of Oz, near Hervey Bay. We chose the 'Cooldingo' ranger-guided tour, so there were 28 of us in a brutal 14 tonne 4WD bus. All the tracks are seriously bumpy which made us all feel suitably adventurous, jostling through the trees. Our first stop was Basin Lake, a freshwater lake located on a sand dune. We spent about 15minswalking through the rainforrest to reach the lake. It was a baking clear blue day so a swim was very refreshing. The water was clear and green and warm and pretty fantastic for swimming in. It was just us and the turtles. We then walked on to Central station, through more forrest, noting the trees, creeks and wildlife around us. Our second stop was Lake Mackensie and after a hearty lunch we headed for another swim. This may have been my favourite. It felt like being at the sea because the lake was so huge and surrounded by white sand, but there were no waves and the water was fresh making it the best place I have ever swum in. Fantastic! Had a bit of a party back at the hostel that evening but it was an early start on day 2. We drove along 70 mile beach which is the superhighway of Fraser. Very cool zooming along the beach! There were various stops along the way, including a shipwrecked boat and coloured sands. We had a dip in the champagne rock pools - a series of pools where the waves crash up behind, to produce the chapagne-like foam. Our last stop was Eli creek, a refreshing creek to wade through. Saw a very big (poisonous) spider! There are also a lot of big ants around here too. As far as I can see, the bigger the insect the worse the bite, although small things can still kill you. We saw a venomous sea snake as well which our ranger decided to pick up! On the third day our group was reduced to 9 as the others had left. We went on a rainforrest walk and up the large sand dune, followed by a swim in the lake. We also visited Lake Birrabean, another picturesque lake for a swim. I saw a couple of dingos, a wedge-tailed Eagle and numerous other birds I could not identify. We both had a fab time and highly recommend Fraser Island and Cooldingo as a means of exploring it.
