Milking the Water BuffaloMilking the Water BuffaloMilking the Water Buffalo

I've got video of these in traffic, but a still shot was easier while they were milking under the highway bridge.
Christina here.

All together now!

"Everybody's got a water buffalo-
Yours is fast but mine is slow-
Oh where do they get them, I don't know-
but everybody's got a water buffalo-oooooooooooooo!!"

(Lyrics by Larry the Cucumber, of "Silly songs with Larry" fame)

Yep, the water buffalo are everywhere. And everybody seems to have one or three, herding them around through the streets, just part of the traffic.
We drink buffalo milk in our tea & coffee, which, as it has lots of yummy fat in it (more than our milk at home), we are growing addicted to. And we eat the buffalo meat in some of the curries. Good stuff. We know we can't fit one into our luggage, but Sheryl's trying to figure out how we can transport 2 back home. She already said she'll take the slow one, & I can have the fast one!
This buffalo looked a little shy, so I kept my distance.

New business idea
You may have something there...a brand new business idea. We can import and raise show quality water buffalo here in Durango. I am wondering, however, if water might just be the operant word in "water buffalo", meaning possibly that they need water to wade around in regularly. Not too much of that here in Durango, unless of course, we buy a big ranch on the river, or on a lake. It could become a tourist attraction, and we could have water buffalo drives through town, all of us armed with our little sticks and wearing ...saris?. Durango could be famous for it's water buffalo festival, with water buffalo BBQ and water buffalo milking contest, followed by a WB ice cream making contest. Wow, I think we are on to something great! Let's brainstorm when you get home. Try to sneak a few head (or horns) into your carryon luggage. love, Bonnie

Wow down memory lane...
I'm enjoying your humor, pictures, and adventure, but I'm especially enjoying going down memory lane....The stop beside the road reminds me of so many years ago of doing the same thing many times, but didn't have any ladies or kids watching. Down a back road and drop the drawers..hee hee. Also, one forgets that water buffalo have a male and female (mostly think of them as hard work, not milking) , didn't think about milking them, just like we milked the cows on the farm... Guess you didn't try fishing with the fishermen....you are having such a joyful time in this adventure...Wish I was doing the same...God bless both of you...Kandy PEACE

Australia
Meagan: Don't worry. We are eating PLENTY of that good food! It's a problem, actually. One of my 2 pairs of pants is getting uncomfortably tight. Should I just buy some good loose Indian clothes and be done with it, or should I fight it? I waffle. What's hilarious, is someone read your comment on this one, and thought maybe we had really traveled to Australia! I don't think we'll make it there this trip, but it's a good one to plan for. Wanna carry my camera next time?

Buffalo Business
Bonnie: Brilliant! Can't tell you how many times your comment has made us laugh. It could work, too. We're thinking of the land in our Valley that borders the Animas. Do you think Serious Texas BBQ would open a Serious Buffalo or Serious India branch? My cousin owns Durango Joe's Coffee Company. They could start marketing the Water Buffalo Latte (incredibly addictive, as I can testify), and I bet the other local shops would follow. We can settle all the details when we get back--gather the investors, etc. Good to hear from you! -cHk

Knickerbocker Tea Company
And Meagan's KTC would love to serve WB Cream in their teas. I'll drink to that!

Blue shirt
BTW, thanks for the blue shirt comment. I couldn't tell! :?) (happy face with a Knickerbocker nose)
