June 9, 2005, Thursday. We were awake early. It was very bright and our night clock indicated almost 7 am. So we got up to go for a walk and discovered we hadn’t adjusted the clock for Pacific Time. It was nearing 6 am. Well, off we went to see Yakima. We walked and walked ‘til we reached the main street then located a greenway trail for biking/hiking. It is a paved trail with scattered benches and playground areas. It looped back from the way we came. Soooo we walked about 2 hours and returned for a quick breakfast. Time to get organized, we used the dump and refilled the water before leaving for Mt. Rainier National Park (NP).
The drive along Mather’s Scenic Byway, rt. 410 west, included climbing and climbing. Chinook Pass is 5,430’ elevation and the scenery is a big WOW! The temps went down from 70 to 40. The pine trees are so dense and snow remains up in the mountains. After we go through the pass and start the decline, temps go up again. The magnificent environment is incredible. Being tall forever, it
is fascinating to feel tiny, not insignificant, just small.
C-25 is our campsite, and it overlooks the Ohanapecosh River. The water is emerald green, crystal clear. We decided to take a hike on the Silver Falls Loop Trail. Passing the hot springs, we continue past Laughing Creek and on to Silver Falls. The walk is through the woods and pines so tall we can’t see the tops of the trees. When we arrive at Silver Falls it is mesmerizing. Hope the photos do justice to this magnificent sight. The vegetation here must be on steroids! Our hike is more than 2 hours and since we did a 2 hours hike this morning, we are weary. After a light supper we are ready for some zzzzzz’s.
