The Departure So I left Toronto on Monday, January 29th and arrived in Hong Kong early on Wednesday. I actually had a really good flight. I managed to get the emergency exit door seat (best seat in the house!) so I had leg room for the 18 hour flight. Plus we actually had to leave the plane in Anchorage, Alaska while they were refuelling, so I got to walk around the terminal and even buy some Alaska smoked salmon (which stunk up my fridge for the next week).
I met two new friends on the flight - Dana and Blair - both on their way to Australia and New Zealand respectively for teacher’s college. We all had some time to kill in Hong Kong, so we decided to explore together. I had the longest stopover - arriving in HK at 7 AM and not leaving again until 11:30 PM. Luckily I had company for part of that time. We managed to do a lot since there were no other tourists, it being a random Wednesday at the end of January and all.
Hong Kong The first place we went was Victoria Peak, which Dana and Blair both had their
hearts set on. I was shocked at how much the peak had changed in the 13 months since I was last there! A stunning view as always, and much less sfog (smog + fog) than last time. Next we got some food at none other than Café de Coral, the ONLY place to eat in HK. Blair left us after that to catch his 3PM flight. Dana and I rode the Star Ferry across to Kowloon then headed up to Mong Kok to wander the Ladies Market. Next we rode the MTR back to HK Island and visited HK Park and did some bird-watching while we rested our feet. Next we rode the elevator of the Bank of China to about midway up the building and saw the view. Dana left me after that, so I was all alone with still about 5 hours to kill until I even had to start THINKING about getting on the train back to the airport. Of course, at this point, I was ABSOLUTELY exhausted and so I decided to go catch a flick at the Pacific Place movie theatre. Marie-Antoinette was playing, and I scored the best seat in the house (apparently they
have assigned seating in HK). The theatre was almost empty, and I was DEFINITELY the only white person in view. So I sprawled out my stuff and got settled in for the movie. Side-note: GOOD MOVIE!! After that I was completely exhausted and even though it was only 7pm and I still had loads of time, I decided to head back to the airport. Cathay Pacific had given me a voucher for $HK75 worth of airport food to apologize for my long stopover, and I had to use it! I decided to eat at a white people food place cause it’s the only place I would actually get to use up the entire voucher (everywhere else is too cheap). Would you believe it, I actually had to add $5 on top of that! PSHAW I can’t believe the meal cost over $10 CDN!!
After that I tried not to fall asleep since I was all alone with some valuable stuff. I failed but luckily I didn’t sleep very long. Then I casually made my way to my gate and looked around at all the Australians. My adventure was just getting started.
I got the emergency exit door seat
AGAIN cause I’m just that cool and I sat next to this friendly German woman. Unfortunately, the ONLY ONLY ONLY thing I wanted to do was sleep. Since on my last flight the attendant had rather rudely woken me from a very comfortable and happy slumber just to serve me breakfast, I told my neighbour to inform the attendant that I didn’t want dinner and just wanted to sleep through it. Thankfully she did just that and I didn’t have to wake up joltingly to an asian woman bringing my chair forward then announcing to a very confused me that it was time for breakfast. YEESH!!
