Sunday morning woke up to find that the market had arrived on our doorstep, to say we walked for 8 hours and still did not see all of it, is not a fib! The amount of purchases undertaken by J and myself required the purchase of a 200ltr holdall, if we had to truly backpack we would need a donkey!
Had our last meals in Chiang Mai and found a lovely tranquil cafe away from the mayhem of the market (went back there twce to recuperate!) Got back to the hostel to start packing - I was advised to "chill out" and meditate for half an hour but the size of the holdall blocked the path to the bed!
We are gobsmacked by the amount of food available hundreds and hundreds of different kinds - locusts, maggoty things (deep fried I think) things you daren't even ask about - sometimes J had to run off as the smell was too much for her delicate tum, especially close to the oversubscribed public squats.....YUK! I was brave enough to sample a Chinese delicacy - black vegetable jelly served on ice with sugar - bloody awful! J was gagging just looking at it.
J had to pick up her Thai silk dress that she had made specially - 15 quid - and she dont like it! Onto Ebay that will go!
Whilst we were at the market at 6 oclock it suddenly went completely silent and you could of heard a pin drop, all Thai people stood to attention whilst the National Anthem was played over the tannoy. It was quite eery but moving.
Well lets hope we get to Chiang Mai airport with all our luggage - we wont be going on a tuk tuk, that for sure! My God we have only been here a week and already expecting excess baggage charges!
We shall be sad to leave Chiang Mai, but hey ho the Kho San Road (shoppers paradise) beckons - so look out Bangkok here we come!
lots of love to you all J and Mum xx
