The thought first came to us in September 2006 - a backpacking trip to Thailand in 2007! To say that I was surprised at J's enthusiasm is an underestatement, she, who usually has to pay excess baggage charges when going away for two weeks, was happily contemplating four weeks in Thailand with a 70L rucksack!! After a weekend on the internet, tickets were booked and hostels secured via YHI and Lonely Planet, and then we had to wait......
Now, I know that we are not going to be venturing where 'no man has trod' in fact thousands upon thousands have passed along the paths that we will be treading but we haven't been there before and we are a tad apprehensive! Our survival kit, unlike Ray Mears or Bruce 'what's his name' consists of arthritis pills, 100% Deet, extra mosquito nets, total sun block, an extra tube of Fixadent, oh, and a hairdryer for J. She was going to include her hair straighteners but luckily her hairdresser persuaded her that it would be futile, as the humidity in Thailand would only make her hair go curly as soon as she had spent hours straightening it!
We are starting in Chiang Mai, then Bangkok, Ko Samui, Ko Phangan and back to Bangkok.
We are both terrified of spiders (any insects really) and any animals other than the domesticated cat or dog - so should have some exciting times. We wish we hadn't read some of the latest blogs, expecially the one with the picture of the spider dwarfing the cigarette packet, ugh!!
No doubt we will fall for every scam going and be ripped off by every tuk-tuk/taxi driver that we encounter - but 'hey' we have struggled to get the money together for this holiday and we aint gonna part with it without a fight!
Rest assured we will be thinking of you all, and we hope that our future blogs will be full of fun and interesting to read. If they are, then you know we are enjoying ourselves, if you don't hear from us then please don't ring us, as we shall probably be homesick, missing you all and end up blubbering down the phone!
God willing, our next blog will be from northern Thailand, or it could be from north terminal Gatwick or even the unpronouncable airport in Bangkok. Who know, just watch this space ......... Love to you all xxxxxxxxxxxx
